Baalbek’s Agony: When Homes Become Graves
Over the past two weeks, the eastern Lebanese region of Baalbek has faced intense Israeli bombing, resulting in over 150 deaths in the past week alone.
In one village, a man recounts how an airstrike destroyed his home, killing three of his children, while he narrowly escaped by being outside. Neighbors, including Muhammad, rushed to help, forced to retrieve the bodies of children with their bare hands as rescue teams were delayed by other attack sites.
One child survivor, brought to the journalists, is too traumatized to speak, while others in local hospitals lie injured and grieving. Among them is 13-year-old Ali Hamza, unable to communicate due to his injuries, with a neighboring patient relaying the stories shared by his family.
Evacuation orders and ongoing bombings have forced many Baalbek residents to flee. One woman, Zanab, now lives with 20 others in a crowded shelter, uncertain if her home is even left standing. This tragedy highlights the severe toll of the conflict on civilians, with families shattered and communities uprooted.
