A Green Revolution in the Muslim World

You never thought you would witness something beyond your imagination, nor did you anticipate that the next generation would be so caring and responsible toward the planet and its communities.

Yet, on November 10, 2024, in a small hall brimming with over 300 attendees, you experienced something unique and unparalleled—a first of its kind in the Muslim community. This was the gala event of a five-year-old educational institution devoted to environmental preservation through nature-centered learning and meaningful connection with creation.

The Arts and Wilderness Institute (AWI), based in Southern California, is the innovative vision of three young and dynamic women: Sama Wareh, Syma Aslam, and Dr. Khadeeja Abdullah. AWI seeks to inspire a thriving Muslim community dedicated to humanity's service.

It champions the philosophy that genuine learning emerges through acts of stewardship and service, instilled through hands-on, immersive "get muddy" experiences. AWI’s educational programs cater to everyone from two-year-old budding naturalists to seasoned retirees.

AWI students contribute through tree planting, fundraising for wells, assisting refugees, and leading nature hikes for the elderly. The institute collaborates with various partners to expand its positive impact. More than an educational center, AWI is a close-knit community—a model for Muslims around the world.

The event itself embodied these values. Organized with meticulous attention, every aspect demonstrated a commitment to environmental consciousness. Participants marveled for four hours, captivated by the community’s journey and AWI's dedication.

No disposable plastics were used, and attendees were encouraged to bring reusable containers for leftovers. Homemade, healthy beverages were prepared, and the students themselves, trained in service, delivered food with smiles that reflected their genuine commitment.

Everything about the event was thoughtful and intentional, from the nutritious food to the on-time schedule. Speeches were concise and inspiring. There was no lamenting, only a resolute assurance conveyed through action.

This organization stands out in the Muslim world, showing that a caring, engaged community is achievable. Thanks to the vision of these three women, a new generation is rising, marked by their compassion and readiness to take on the responsibilities we have long anticipated.

Now is the time for collective support. AWI’s goal is to establish a retreat center and a self-sufficient village in harmony with nature. Visit their site and contribute to fortify their mission.
