Disciplining The Self | Ustadh Abdurahman Murphy

In this talk by Abdurahman Murphy, he reflects on the profound lessons we can derive from the Quran and how Allah has designed the Quran to be not just a sacred text but a guide for practical reflection and application in our daily lives.

Murphy emphasizes that while many Muslims treat the Quran with reverence, it's crucial not to revere it in a way that isolates us from engaging with its message. He shares a teaching from one of his own teachers, who believed that the state of one’s Quran (whether pristine or worn) reflects the depth of their engagement with it.

Murphy goes on to discuss how Allah uses examples in the Quran, especially stories of human development, to teach us about the different stages of life. He highlights the importance of understanding these stages in order to guide us toward spiritual growth.

He shares a touching story about the Prophet Muhammad’s interaction with a young boy named Abu Mahura, who initially mocked the call to prayer. Through a gentle and strategic approach, the Prophet won over the boy’s heart, transforming him from a mocker of the Adhan to its most beloved caller. This story demonstrates the Prophet’s deep understanding of human nature and the significance of nurturing hearts, especially at the right developmental stage.

Murphy underscores that this story isn’t just about a child—it’s a reflection of our own spiritual immaturity and childishness at times. He draws parallels between the childish nature of adults who only act according to their emotions or whims, and the example of the tyrant Pharaoh, who despite witnessing miracles and receiving divine guidance, rejected them due to his lack of self-discipline.

This teaches us that true strength lies not in external power, but in the ability to control our desires, emotions, and actions in accordance with Allah's commands.

Ultimately, Murphy urges the listeners to reflect on the qualities that will lead to success in this life and the next, pointing to the Quran’s descriptions of those who will attain paradise: those who have deep reverence and fear of Allah’s commands, showing maturity in their devotion.

The lecture serves as a reminder of the importance of self-discipline and the transformative power of engaging with the Quran and with Allah’s guidance in our lives.
