Calls for the release of Gaza hospital director detained by Israel
In the latest development from Gaza, Dr. Husam Abu Safia, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, was detained by Israeli forces after weeks of defying orders to shut down the facility.
Kamal Adwan Hospital, located in Northern Gaza, had been heavily damaged in Israeli airstrikes, which had destroyed the building and forced medical staff and patients to flee.
The last known images of Dr. Abu Safia show him walking toward the Israeli tanks that had previously bombed the hospital he had worked tirelessly to protect.
The footage, filmed shortly before his detention, highlights the immense challenges faced by medical professionals in Gaza, who continue to treat injured Palestinians despite constant threats and escalating violence.
The situation worsened after Israeli forces issued a 15-minute warning to evacuate the hospital before a violent raid on the area. As a result, Northern Gaza was left without any functioning medical facilities, worsening the already dire humanitarian crisis.
Dr. Abu Safia, a pediatrician by training, had refused to close the hospital despite repeated Israeli orders. For nearly three months, as Israel imposed a siege on the north of Gaza, he continued to care for the wounded, even after suffering injuries in previous Israeli airstrikes.
His resolve was clear: "Whatever they do, they will never be able to prevent us from providing our medical services to the Palestinian people," he said, embodying the determination of many medical professionals in the region.
Dr. Abu Safia’s personal tragedy adds to the weight of his story. In October, his 8-year-old son, Ibrahim, was killed by Israeli forces. The family claimed Ibrahim had been used as a human shield during his father’s detention, intensifying the emotional toll of the ongoing conflict.

His detention marks a dark moment in a broader humanitarian crisis, as the closure of medical facilities in Gaza continues to leave civilians without access to essential care.
The video documenting his defiance and eventual capture serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing hardships faced by Palestinians, particularly medical professionals, who risk their lives daily to provide care amidst escalating violence.
