Keir Starmer stands against Donald Trump’s plan to level Gaza

In the recent Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs), Sir Ed Davey, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, raised a series of pressing issues, including the tragic murder of a 15-year-old in Sheffield, the ongoing struggles faced by full-time carers, and the state of foreign policy concerning Gaza.
Tackling Knife Crime and Supporting Victims
Opening his speech, Sir Ed Davey expressed his condolences regarding the death of the 15-year-old in Sheffield, associating himself with the Prime Minister's remarks about the tragedy. He emphasized the importance of supporting any government actions aimed at tackling the growing issue of knife crime, an issue that has affected countless communities across the country.
The Carer's Allowance Scandal
Shifting to a domestic matter, Sir Ed highlighted the ongoing problems with the Carer's Allowance scandal. He referenced the case of his constituent, Andrea, a full-time carer for her mother, who was among thousands of carers caught up in the repayment scandal with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
Despite the government's announcement of an independent review to address the issue, Andrea received a letter summoning her to a tribunal, even though her mother's health had worsened and she was placed in a care home. Sir Ed called on the Prime Minister to step in and cancel Andrea’s tribunal and suspend all proceedings against carers like her until the review concludes.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the issue, reiterating that the independent review was set up in response to concerns raised by Sir Ed and others. However, he stated that he would need more details to address Andrea’s specific case.
Concerns Over U.S. President’s Remarks on Gaza
Sir Ed also raised a significant international concern during the session, specifically regarding U.S. President Donald Trump's controversial comments about forcibly displacing 1.8 million people from Gaza.
Sir Ed expressed alarm at the potential implications of such statements on the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, asking whether the Prime Minister believed President Trump understood the dangers of these remarks, particularly for both Palestinians and Israelis.
The Prime Minister responded by emphasizing the importance of maintaining the ceasefire, ensuring that hostages are released, and delivering essential aid to Gaza. He also highlighted two powerful images that had stuck with him: the emotional reunion of Emily Deari with her mother and the heartbreaking sight of thousands of Palestinians walking through the rubble to find their homes.
The Prime Minister reiterated the government's commitment to a two-state solution and stressed that this position, along with concerns over President Trump’s statements, would be firmly communicated to the White House.
Sir Ed Davey’s interventions during PMQs focused on the immediate needs of vulnerable groups in the UK, including victims of knife crime and carers facing financial hardship, while also addressing the precarious situation in Gaza. His calls for urgent action from the Prime Minister on both domestic and foreign policy matters reflect the pressing concerns of many across the country.
