Social injustice—whether in the form of oppression, discrimination, or economic disparity—has plagued societies throughout history. Islam, however, stands firmly against all forms of injustice, emphasizing fairness, equality, and the dignity of every human being.

The Quran and Hadith provide clear guidance on how to establish justice and uphold the rights of individuals, regardless of race, status, or background.

Quranic Teachings on Social Justice

Allah commands justice and prohibits oppression in multiple verses of the Quran:

Justice as a Divine Command

"Indeed, Allah commands justice, good conduct, and giving to relatives and forbids immorality, bad conduct, and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded."
(Surah An-Nahl 16:90)

This verse encapsulates the core principles of a just society: fairness, kindness, and charity, while strongly condemning oppression and corruption.

Stand Firm for Justice

"O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do."
(Surah Al-Ma'idah 5:8)

Here, Allah instructs believers to uphold justice, even when dealing with adversaries, proving that justice in Islam is not selective but universal.

Oppression Leads to Ruin

"And do not incline toward those who do wrong, lest you be touched by the Fire, and you would not have besides Allah any protectors; then you would not be helped."
(Surah Hud 11:113)

Islam does not only condemn those who commit oppression but also warns against supporting or remaining silent in the face of injustice.

The Prophet’s (ﷺ) Approach to Social Injustice

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was a champion of justice. His life is filled with instances where he stood against oppression and defended the rights of the weak.

Defending the Oppressed
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

"Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or is oppressed."
The companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah, we help the oppressed, but how do we help the oppressor?"
He replied: "By preventing him from oppressing others."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6952)

This hadith highlights that justice involves not only supporting victims but also guiding oppressors toward righteousness.

Economic Justice
The Prophet (ﷺ) prohibited exploitation and unfair trade practices, ensuring economic justice. He said:

"Give the worker his wages before his sweat dries."
(Sunan Ibn Majah 2443)

This teaching ensures fairness and dignity for laborers, preventing exploitation by the wealthy.

Racial and Social Equality
In his final sermon, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) declared:

"All mankind is from Adam and Eve. An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab, nor does a non-Arab have superiority over an Arab; a white person has no superiority over a black person, nor does a black person have superiority over a white person—except by piety and good action."

This profound statement dismantled racial and class-based discrimination, establishing the Islamic principle of equality.

Our Role in Upholding Justice

Islam teaches that injustice is a grave sin that leads to societal decay. Whether through economic exploitation, racial discrimination, or political corruption, oppression must be confronted. As Muslims, we are obligated to stand for justice, support the oppressed, and work towards a fair society.

May Allah guide us to be among those who uphold truth and justice in all aspects of life. Ameen.
