The Importance of Being Fair & Standing For Justice in Islam
(Sabr) is a concept we are all familiar with as Muslims. It is a term often repeated in our lives, reminding us to bear patience through the different challenges and difficulties that arise. No matter the situation, we are taught to bear patience in the face of calamity, illness, hardship, and even when others wrong us.
The Importance of Patience
There are times when you may be suffering from a sickness or illness, and while you make dua (supplication) and seek a remedy, you are still advised to bear patience. This is a reminder that our reward for patience comes from Allah, and we must trust in His plan. When calamity strikes, we are also told to be patient. Whether it’s a personal loss, emotional pain, or even harm caused by others, patience is the key to overcoming these trials.
However, patience can be especially challenging when someone wrongs us. For example, if someone strikes you, are you not allowed to strike back? According to the Quran, the recompense for something bad is an equal retaliation.
But Allah, in His infinite wisdom, encourages us to forgive. He reminds us that the reward for forgiveness is great, and sometimes, letting go is in our best interest. Holding onto resentment can prevent us from progressing in life, whereas forgiving others allows us to move forward in peace.
The Path of Forgiveness and Justice
Indeed, we are allowed to retaliate when wronged, but Allah urges us to strive for forgiveness. Why? Because sometimes, pursuing justice in the world can cost us more than letting go.
When two people continue to wrong each other in an endless cycle, it not only disrupts their lives but also prevents personal growth. Allah tells us that sometimes, letting go is more beneficial, as it can lead to peace and progression in our lives.
Yet, we must remember that justice is not delayed forever. It is natural to feel frustration and wonder when Allah will deliver justice for the wrongs done to us. But we must place our trust in Allah, knowing that He is the Most Just, and that His justice will be carried out either in this world or in the Hereafter.
The Greater Love of Allah
Patience also plays a vital role in our relationship with Allah. During times of difficulty, we may find ourselves turning closer to Allah. When life is filled with ease, some may forget their Creator, but when challenges arise, Allah draws us nearer. It is through trials and tribulations that our faith can become stronger. When Allah loves a servant, He tests them more, and this test is not meant to harm us but to elevate our status and reward.
The Promise of Allah
We are reminded throughout the Quran that patience is not easy, and it is only through the help of Allah that we can truly bear it. Allah says in Surah Ash-Shura, “So be patient. Indeed, the promise of Allah is truth.”
Patience is not just about enduring pain, but about remaining steadfast in our worship and faith. When facing trials, do not allow them to drive you away from Allah. Instead, let them bring you closer to Him. Continue to seek forgiveness for your own sins, and strive to better yourself in worship.
It is in these moments of patience that Allah promises a reward. Whether it is the justice you seek for a wrong done to you, or the peace that comes from letting go, know that Allah’s timing is perfect. What may seem like a delay is, in fact, an opportunity for you to grow closer to Him and become a better believer.
A Temporary World, An Eternal Afterlife
Remember, this world is fleeting. We will face loss, pain, and hardships, but the true reward and justice lie in the Hereafter. Patience in this world will lead to eternal reward, while impatience or revenge may only result in further suffering. Allah has promised us paradise for those who endure with patience, and it is through His mercy that we are rewarded.
So, my dear brothers and sisters, when faced with trials, remember that patience is not just a virtue—it is a path to success, both in this world and the Hereafter. Bear patience, seek the help of Allah, and trust in His justice and timing. Allah has promised that justice will be served, and that those who endure with patience will be rewarded beyond measure.
May Allah grant us the strength to bear patience and the wisdom to forgive. May He make us steadfast in our faith and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter. Ameen.
