When the Angels Descend Upon You
The blessed night of Laylatul Qadr, the Night of Decree, is one of the most profound nights of the Islamic calendar. It holds unparalleled significance, as it is the night when the Qur'an was first revealed.
According to Islamic tradition, this night is filled with the descent of angels, all of whom love witnessing and participating in certain acts of worship, such as the recitation of the Qur'an, repentance (Toba), charity, and supplication.
In this article, we will delve into the roles these angels play on Laylatul Qadr, and reflect on how our actions during this night can connect us to the celestial beings, and earn us the immense blessings that come with this special occasion.
1. The Angels Who Love the Recitation of the Qur'an
One of the most beautiful acts of worship on Laylatul Qadr is the recitation of the Qur'an. The angels, especially the Archangel Jibril (Gabriel), are known to have a deep love for the Qur'an. Jibril himself was the messenger who brought down the Qur'an to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) over the course of 23 years. On Laylatul Qadr, Jibril descends along with countless angels to commemorate the night when the Qur'an was first revealed.
In fact, there are more angels present on this night than the stars in the sky or even the rocks on the earth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that the amount of angels descending on Laylatul Qadr is so numerous that they fill the heavens and earth, and the light they bring can steal the rays of the sun.
This immense number of angels is drawn to the act of reciting the Qur'an. As you recite the Qur'an on this blessed night, imagine that you are not alone. Every verse you speak is heard by an army of angels who are present to witness the beauty of the words of Allah being recited.
The act of reciting the Qur'an brings us closer to Allah and fills our homes with the presence of angels. They surround us as we recite, listening to the words, elevating our supplications, and interceding for us.
2. The Angels Who Love Toba (Repentance)
Repentance, or Toba, is another act that the angels rejoice in. During Laylatul Qadr, Allah's mercy is abundant, and the angels are eager to witness the repentance of His servants. Allah is particularly close to His creation on this night, and He is more willing to forgive those who turn back to Him with sincerity.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that Allah’s forgiveness is vast on Laylatul Qadr, and the angels who descend on this night are there to bear witness to the sincere repentance of the believers. The angels not only witness but also rejoice when we seek Allah’s forgiveness. They carry our sincere pleas for forgiveness to Allah, asking Him to pardon us and grant us His mercy.
If you find yourself in need of forgiveness, especially during the last ten nights of Ramadan, make the most of Laylatul Qadr by turning to Allah in sincere repentance. The angels will be there, witnessing your Toba, interceding on your behalf, and asking Allah to forgive your sins.
3. The Angels Who Love Charity
Charity, or Sadaqah, is another action that the angels love to see. Allah has promised great rewards for those who give in His cause, and during Laylatul Qadr, the angels are present to witness the charity given by believers.
On Laylatul Qadr, every act of charity, no matter how small, is magnified. The angels watch over the act of giving, recording each deed and elevating it to Allah. Imagine that when you give charity on this night, the angels are taking your act of kindness and raising it up to Allah, asking for a reward for you.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that charity wipes away sins just as water extinguishes fire. During Laylatul Qadr, the reward for charity is multiplied many times over. The angels are delighted when they witness a believer’s generosity, especially on this blessed night.
4. The Angels Who Love Supplication (Dua)
On Laylatul Qadr, the angels are also drawn to the supplications (duas) of the believers. The night is a time when Allah’s mercy is abundant, and He listens attentively to every prayer and request. The angels, knowing the power of this night, eagerly carry our duas to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged us to make as many supplications as possible during the last ten nights of Ramadan, especially on the odd-numbered nights. The angels, in turn, listen closely to these supplications and intercede on our behalf, asking Allah to grant our desires and needs.
The angels are not only attentive to our duas but also actively participate in bringing them before Allah. This is why the last ten nights of Ramadan are so special — the angels are busy, eagerly recording the prayers of those who ask, and Allah, in His infinite mercy, is more likely to grant those prayers on Laylatul Qadr.
5. The Angels Who Love Congregations (Jama'ah)
Another act of worship that attracts the attention of the angels on Laylatul Qadr is congregational prayer (Jama'ah). There is nothing more beloved to the angels than when the believers come together to pray in unity. The act of gathering together in worship, whether in the mosque or at home, pleases the angels, and they are present to witness the unity of the believers in prayer.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "The angels of Allah surround those who remember Allah in a gathering and they call upon Allah to forgive them." This makes congregational prayer a significant act on Laylatul Qadr. If you are able to gather in prayer with others on this night, remember that the angels are present with you, rejoicing in the unity and devotion of the believers.
The Night of Laylatul Qadr: A Night Like No Other
Laylatul Qadr is a night unlike any other. It is the night when the angels descend in great numbers to witness and partake in the worship of the believers. It is a night of mercy, forgiveness, and blessings. The angels who love the recitation of the Qur'an, the angels who rejoice in Toba, the angels who observe acts of charity, the angels who cherish supplications, and the angels who witness congregational prayer — all of them are present on this night.
As believers, we are given the opportunity to earn the rewards of these acts of worship, knowing that the angels are there, witnessing our devotion and interceding on our behalf. The magnitude of the angels’ presence on Laylatul Qadr is overwhelming, and their love for the worship of Allah only magnifies the importance of this night.
Take advantage of the last ten nights of Ramadan. Increase your acts of worship, recite the Qur'an, make sincere repentance, give charity, offer supplications, and pray in congregation. Who knows, maybe it will be your home, your prayer, your recitation that Jibril will convey salaam to, just as he did for the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her).
May Allah accept our worship, forgive our sins, and grant us the blessings of Laylatul Qadr.
