Wegovy - a Magic Pill for Weight-Loss Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration

On December 22, 2025 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the oral version of Wegovy, making it the first pill of the popular GLP-1 medications to get the green light for weight loss. Body weight is a problem for humans and gives rise to many other associated problems.

A google search showed that 800 million adults around the world are now overweight to qualify for weight loss. The highest rates are seen in Europe and North America where more than two in five adults qualified, far higher than global than the global average. Similar levels were only found in Pacific Islands. And women were more likely to qualify than men, while eligibility rose sharply with age.

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. BMI does not take into account muscle mass, bone density, or body composition.

According to U.S. Head, Lung, and Blood Institute it is one process that provides the healthcare provider when checking one's health- a BMI below 18.5 is underweight; 18.5 to 24.9 is heathy and a BMI of 25.0 to 29.9 is overweight and 30.0 or above is obese. In order to maintain and improve one's health, one should maintain a healthy weight, eat a heart-heathy diet, and prepare healthy recipes, and increase physical activity.

Overweight and obesity may increase risk for many health problems such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke. Other health problems are metabolic syndrome, fatty liver and some cancers.

Also, diseases of gallbladder and pancreas, kidney, pregnancy, fertility, and sexual and mental health problems. These health problems may exacerbate if one carries extra fat around one's waist. Staying at a healthy weight can prevent these problems, stop from worsening, or even may go away.

A Time article by Alice Park, the senior correspondent in its January 5, 2026 issue said that in the last week of December 2015 while most of the U.S. was still in holiday mode, Novo Nordisk's plant in North Carolina was operating at full capacity.

People who wanted to lose weight and were prescribed Wegovy now had the option of taking the tablet daily, versus injecting themselves with the drug once once a week. They will lose about the same weight with either version: between 16% and 17% of their starting body weight. The plant, just outside of Raleigh, is operating around the clock to produce bottles of pills in four different doses.

The bottles are bound for retail stores and online pharmacies and will be available starting on Jan 5. "Obesity has become a consumer-oriented disease," said Novo Nordisk's CEO Mike Doustdar in an interview with TIME. "We're embracing that."

The company's entire supply of the drug, from start to finish, will be manufactured in North Carolina. Days before the launch of Wegovy pill, Alice Park visited the plant to watch how the first Wegovy pills are being produced, bottled, and packaged for patients.

It all starts with a yeast. Wegovy pill starts with a fungus: specifically, the same yeast used to make bread, called Saccharomyces cerevisiae. But instead of fermenting sugars or grains to make bread rise, the yeast cells are genetically engineered at Novo Nordisk's facility in Clayton, North Carolina to produce a protein that undergoes fermentation in several four-story tall tanks, then multiple purification steps over about a month to produce semaglutide, a compound that mimics a human hormone that regulates appetite by working in the reward center of the brain. It can help people feel full and reduce feelings of hunger.

Harvesting the main ingredient. After the fermentation and purification process, semaglutide forms a beige paste with the consistency of pancake batter. In one of the few manual steps in the largely automated production, technicians scrape the paste from large funnels and freeze it at -20 degC, where it keeps for up to five years. But given the popularity of Wegovy and the anticipated demand for the pill, the company currently has about a month's supply of semaglutide in its freezers.

Taking the pill form. In the final step of the process, the paste is thawed and purified into a liquid at a high temperature. That heated liquid is then spray-dried into a fine white powder, similar to the way snow-making machines turn hot water into snow. That powder, collected in large bags from a funnel that extends through three floors, is then pressed into Wegovy tablets.

A Long path to the pill. While this semaglutide pill is the first to treat obesity, it isn't the first that the company made. Scientists at Novo Nordisk became first interested in semaglutide in diabetes treatment since it can also help control blood glucose, and its first semaglutide-based therapy called Ozempiic was approved in 2017 for diabetes, Patients injected themselves once a week to control blood sugar, but to make it easier the company also developed a pill form, called Rybelsus, approved by the FDA in2019.

Turning Ozempic into an oral pill required finding a way to protect it from the hostile environment of the stomach just long enough for it to be absorbed by the body, but not very long as with too much permeability things that should not be absorbed such as bacteria get absorbed. The scientist found a way to a buffer to shield the drug while it released enough of semaglutide to be effective. Yet, because the pill has to go through the stomach and digestive tract, the pill is not effective as its injected form.

The diabetes patients noticed that they were losing weight with semaglutide, Novo Nordisk and other companies started studies of the compound for its potential effects effects on obesity. Studies confirmed what patients were experiencing and in 2021, the FDA approved Nordisk's Wegovy to treat obesity. But people had to inject themselves, and developing the pill form became the next hurdle.

Stiff competition from Eli Lilly, a famous company. Eli lilly, which makes the injectable GLP-1 drugs Mounjaro for diabetes, and Zepbound for weight loss developed a pill called orforglipron, and In December 2025 Elli Lilly released data showing its pill could help maintain weight loss after injection its GLP-1 drugs for more than a year, and submitted a request to FDA for approval. The agency granted a priority voucher to Elli Lilly in November, 2025 and conducted review so it could come to the market earlier than atypical drug.

Researchers found that Elli Lilly's Zepbound lead to greater weight loss - up to 21% of body weight compared to 15% of Wegovy. As such Novo Nordisk is developing a higher dose of Wegovy in the injectable form that produces comparable results of about 20% weight loss. It is the only drug that benefits heart disease and certain liver conditions and FDA allowed its claim on the label.

Novo Nordisk appointed a new head - Doustdar as the company started losing the market to Elli Lilly. The company saw Wegovy as a coup and returned to focusing on diabetes and obesity, a market of about two billion people and it started producing all the doses for them.

In coming weeks, Novo Nordisk Wegovy pill will be available in four doses; a starter dose of 1.5 mg, as well as 4mg, 9mg and 25 mg. Most patients will start with the lowest dose and gradually ramp it up over a period of months until they reach the maximum dose, and continued to maintain their new weight.

The company in coordination with the White House announced in December, 2025, the starter dose will cost $149 for a month's supply for people paying out of pocket. The next highest dose will cost $149 until April 2026, after which it will increase to $199 a month. People with insurance plans may pay as little as $24 for a 30-day supply. Doustdar was happy that a deal was reached with the White House with a win-win situation for all, and for hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Obesity and overweight have become global problems, and the affected people are searching for solutions At present Wegovy and Zepbound are the two main choices weight loss medications. The studies suggest that Wegovy tends to bring more nausea or constipation, while Zepbound can cause injection site irritation. The choice depends on how your body responds, which is why working with a health provider helps finding the right fit

Zepbound and Wegovy both come in prefilled injection pens. Wegovy is also available in pill form.

Zepbound has been associated with greater weight loss in a head-to-head study. Zepbound also has proven benefits for people with obstructive sleep apnea. Wegovy is approved for cardiovascular risk reduction and to treat a type of fatty liver disease, while Zepbound is not. Both Wegovy and Zepbound work with body hormones to lower appetite and slow digestion. They share a similar basic foundation but differ in how they activate pathways.
