"Islam is too hard."
It's a sentence we hear often. Sometimes from non-Muslims looking at Islam from the outside. Sometimes from Muslims who feel overwhelmed by their own struggles.
But is Islam really difficult?
Or have we misunderstood what Islam actually asks of us?
"Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship." (Quran 2:185)This verse was revealed while talking about fasting in Ramadan-a month that many people consider challenging. Yet Allah reminds us that even in acts of worship, His intention is not to make our lives miserable but to bring us closer to Him.
Islam is a religion of mercy, not punishment.
We watch people who appear to pray every prayer on time, recite Quran beautifully, wake up for Tahajjud every night, volunteer constantly, smile through every hardship, and never seem to struggle.
We begin to think:
"Why can't I be like that?"
But what we don't see are their struggles, their tears, their moments of weakness, or the years they spent growing.
Islam is a journey, not a competition.
Allah does not compare your chapter one with someone else's chapter twenty.
They think they need to stop every sin immediately, never miss a prayer again, memorise large portions of the Quran, give constant charity, and become an expert in Islam all at once.
When they fail, they feel like giving up.
But that isn't what Islam teaches.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, taught us that the deeds most beloved to Allah are those that are consistent, even if they are small.
One sincere prayer today is better than making impossible promises you'll abandon tomorrow.
At its heart, Islam is about knowing your Creator. When you love Allah, obedience begins to feel different. Just as you don't mind making sacrifices for someone you love, acts of worship become expressions of love rather than burdens.
He whispers: "You're too sinful." "You've already failed." "You'll never be a good Muslim." "So why even try?" But Allah's mercy is greater than every sin.
Every day is a new opportunity to return. The door of repentance remains open until our final breath.
Every temptation you resist. Every prayer you force yourself to stand for. Every tear you shed in repentance. None of it is wasted.
But your Lord is not waiting for an excuse to reject you. He is inviting you to return to Him again and again. Perhaps Islam only feels difficult when we believe we have to carry it alone.
When we remember that Allah is the One helping us every step of the way, the path becomes lighter.
Not because life becomes easy. But because we know we are never walking it by ourselves.
