What Does the Quran Say About Marriage?

In a world where marriage is often portrayed through unrealistic expectations, the Quran offers a beautifully balanced vision: marriage is about tranquility, love, mercy, commitment, and mutual responsibility.

The Quran says that Allah created spouses "so that you may find tranquility in them" and placed affection and mercy between them (Quran 30:21). This reminds us that marriage is not simply about finding someone attractive or compatible-it is meant to become a source of peace and emotional security.

The Quran also describes spouses as "clothing" for one another (Quran 2:187). Clothing protects, covers, and brings comfort. In the same way, a husband and wife are meant to protect each other's dignity, support one another, and keep each other's private matters private.

Kindness is another central principle. Allah commands believers to "live with them in kindness" (Quran 4:19). Marriage, therefore, cannot be built only on rights and expectations. It requires patience, compassion, forgiveness, and good character-especially when disagreements arise.

The Quran also describes marriage as a "solemn covenant" (Quran 4:21), showing that it is a serious commitment, not something to be entered into or abandoned casually. Both spouses have rights and responsibilities, and the Quran emphasizes fairness between them (Quran 2:228).

Ultimately, the Quran's vision of marriage is not a picture of a perfect couple who never argue or struggle. It is a relationship where two imperfect people strive to create sakinah (tranquility), mawaddah (affection), and rahmah (mercy).

Marriage in the Quran is not simply about finding the right person. It is about becoming the right kind of person for your spouse-one who brings peace, protects their dignity, and chooses kindness even when things get difficult.
