Hardship can make us feel vulnerable in ways we never expected. A sudden illness, an accident, financial difficulty, loss, or simply a period when everything seems to become too heavy can remind us how little control we truly have.

But for a believer, that vulnerability can also become a doorway back to Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ď·ş taught us duas for both protection from hardship and strength when hardship arrives. They remind us that we are never completely alone, even when we cannot see what is coming.

A Dua for Protection

Among the beautiful supplications taught by the Prophet ď·ş is one that is recited three times in the morning and three times in the evening:

"In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."

The meaning behind this dua is profound. We cannot see everything happening around us. We do not know what may be approaching, what dangers may be hidden from us, or what tomorrow may bring.

But Allah sees, hears, and knows everything.

The dua therefore becomes an expression of complete reliance upon Him. We begin our day by placing ourselves under Allah's protection and acknowledge that nothing escapes His knowledge.

The transcript also highlights another supplication from the Prophet ď·ş asking Allah for well-being in the body, hearing and sight, while seeking refuge from disbelief, poverty, and the punishment of the grave. These duas were recited regularly as part of the morning and evening remembrance.

What If Hardship Still Comes?

This is an important question.

If we make dua for protection, does that mean a believer will never experience illness, loss, accidents, or other trials?

Not necessarily.

A hardship may still come by the will of Allah. But that does not mean the dua was unanswered.

Sometimes protection means being protected from a hardship altogether. Sometimes it means being protected from its harmful consequences. And sometimes the believer goes through the trial but comes out of it closer to Allah, stronger in faith, and rewarded for their patience.

As the transcript explains, if a person turns to Allah for protection and is still tested, the believer can understand that Allah may intend good through that test-provided they respond by turning back to Him.

The goal, then, is not to imagine a life without hardship.

It is to build a relationship with Allah strong enough to carry us through hardship.

The Dua of Yunus

Perhaps one of the most powerful duas for a person facing distress is the supplication of Prophet Yunus عليه السلام:

"There is no god but You; glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers."

Prophet Yunus عليه السلام made this dua while trapped in an unimaginable situation-alone in the darkness, inside the belly of the whale, in the depths of the sea.

There seemed to be no way out.

Yet he turned to Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ taught that no Muslim calls upon Allah with this supplication except that Allah answers them. The Qur'an then reminds us of Allah's response to Yunus عليه السلام and says:

"So We responded to him and saved him from distress. And thus do We save the believers."
Qur'an 21:88

Notice the final words: "And thus do We save the believers."

The story was not only about Yunus عليه السلام.

It became a reminder for every believer who finds themselves in darkness.

Your hardship may look different. Your situation may have no obvious way out. You may not know what Allah's plan is.

But you can still call upon Him.

Sometimes Allah Gives More Than We Ask

When we make dua during hardship, we often have one specific outcome in mind: Ya Allah, remove this problem.

But Allah knows what we do not know.

The transcript beautifully points out that when a person acknowledges their vulnerability to Allah, especially during hardship, Allah may not simply remove the immediate difficulty. He may give them something they did not even know they needed to ask for.

Perhaps the hardship brings a heart back to Allah. Perhaps it teaches patience. Perhaps it removes an attachment that was harming us. Perhaps it opens a door we could never have imagined.

And perhaps the greatest gift is not that we escape the trial, but that we emerge from it knowing Allah more deeply.

Make Dua Before the Hardship Comes

We often remember dua when something goes wrong. But the Sunnah teaches us to remember Allah before the difficulty arrives.

Morning and evening adhkar give us an opportunity to seek Allah's protection, ask Him for well-being, and place our trust in Him before we know what the day will bring. This is not about living in fear. It is about living with dependence upon Allah.

We do what we can, take the necessary means, and then place our trust in the One who knows what we cannot see.

And when hardship does come, we return to the same place: Allah.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing a believer can say in a moment of helplessness is simply: "There is no god but You; glory be to You. Indeed, I was among the wrongdoers."

What Will You Leave Behind?

Our lives are filled with things that eventually disappear. Money is spent. Possessions are replaced. Buildings age. Even our names can eventually fade from people's memories. But the good we leave behind for the sake of Allah can continue long after we are gone.

That is one reason supporting Islamic knowledge and beneficial work can be more than a donation-it can become part of the legacy we leave for our akhirah.

An IslamiCity membership helps support an ongoing mission of sharing Islamic knowledge, Qur'anic resources, educational content, news, and tools with Muslims around the world.

If something you help build continues benefiting people after you have left this world, the hope is that its reward continues too. So as you ask Allah to protect you from hardship, ask yourself another question: What am I investing in for my akhirah?

Become an IslamiCity member today. Your membership can help sustain beneficial work that reaches people today-and, by Allah's permission, become part of a legacy of sadaqah that continues beyond your lifetime.
