In May, the Philippine city of Marawi was overun by an alliance of armed groups who had pledged allegiance to ISIL. It was a daring assault that left the country in shock.

Now, after a ruinous five-month fight, the group has been pushed out and Marawi - the biggest Muslim city in the country - is almost completely destroyed. And almost 1,000 people are dead.

Al Jazeera's 101 East joined the military in its final push to take the city. With many saying that the battle for Marawi is only the beginning of a longer conflict on the southern island of Mindanao, home to some 20 million people, 101 East's Steve Chao joins the Stream to take us inside the war and discuss what's next.
