Fireworks
Fireworks, fireworks!
In dazzling colors
Pierced through the dark
Lit up cold, Manhattan sky.
Another year of hope and sorrow
I’m waving you good-bye.
Fireworks, fireworks!
From L.A. to Pittsburgh
Around the Washington Mall
What a display of glittering rainbow
For me and you, and for all.
Fireworks, fireworks,
Around the sky of Sydney Harbor
Lighting up Eiffel Tower
From Moscow to Tokyo
Holding hands in bursting joy
Wide-eyed Juliets and Romeos.
Fireworks, fireworks!
Who’s there to console aching hearts
When innocent tears dry…
Fireworks, fireworks!
White phosphorus rains down from Gaza sky
In re-education center
Uyghur men rot in hopeless sigh
In Rohingya camps
Violated women spend bleak days and nights
Kashmiri blood spills on roads
For legitimate rights
Fireworks, fireworks…
On New Year’s Eve
Shouldn’t I wonder
About their plights ?
