The Great Mosque of Damascus, also called Umayyad Mosque, was built between 705 and 715 CE by the Umayyad Caliph al-Walīd I. The mosque was built on the site of a Christian basilica dedicated to John the Baptist, honored as a prophet by both Christians and Muslims. The mosque is also believed by Muslims to be the place where Jesus (PBUH) will return before the End of Days (photo: iStock by Getty Images).

The history of Najrān can be traced back to 4,000 years ago. It was once occupied by the Romans; in fact, it was the first Yemeni city to fall to the Romans on their way to the Yemeni kingdom of Saba'. Christianity was introduced into Najrān, in the 5th century AD or perhaps a century earlier. According to the Arab Muslim historian Ibn Isḥāq, Najran was the first place where Christianity took root in South Arabia (photo: Wikipedia).

Martin Luther King (MLK) Day is an excellent opportunity for American Muslims to reflect upon Islam’s support for diversity and racial equality. Islam’s respect for diversity originates in the Quran. While describing many of Allah’s signs for mankind, the Quran states, “And of His signs is ... the diversity of your [mankind’s] languages and your…

There has been much misinformation about Islam. Reports in Western media tend to perpetuate stereotypes that Islam is a violent religion and Muslim women are oppressed.
