Rep. Ilhan Omar urged people angered by the death of George Floyd to "find a balance" as protests have erupted in Minneapolis following his death while he was in police custody.

Floyd could be seen on video gasping for breath during an arrest in which an officer kneeled on his neck for almost eight minutes. In the footage, George pleads that he cannot breathe and slowly stops talking and moving.

Omar represents the congressional district where the incident occurred.

"It's also devastating to know the anger and the frustration that people feel and have it be, really evolve into a situation that is dangerous for everyone, " she said.

"To me, it's important for people to realize that violence begets violence and more force brings about loss of life and more devastation."

Omar also said she wants to work with community leaders to find ways to maintain social distancing during the protests to keep people safe during the coronavirus pandemic.
