Dua (Prayer) of Fasting

The following dua (prayers) are recited at the beginning and end of the fast to indicate and affirm the intention of the fast.

A person's intention when fasting is to bring him/herself closer to God.

The purpose of making an intention before every deed is to remind our inner self and confirm with our verbal intention that we seek the pleasure of God in our all actions.

Dua (Prayer) at the Beginning of the Fast 1

  وَبِصَوْمِ غَدٍ نَّوَيْتُ مِنْ شَهْرِ رَمَضَانَ

Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri ramadan

I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan

Or you can also recite the following:

Dua (Prayer) at the Beginning of the Fast 2

Nawaitu sauma ghadin anadai fardu shahri ramadhana hazihissanati lillahitaala

I intend to do obligatory fast tomorrow in the month of Ramadan this year because of Allah

Dua (Prayer) at the End of the Fast

 اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ امنْتُ وَعَليْكَ تَوَكّلتُ وَ عَلى رِزْقِكَ اَفْطَرْتُ

Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa alayka tawakkaltu wa ala rizq-ika-aftartu

O Allah! I fasted for You and I believe in You and I put my trust in You and I break my fast with Your sustenance

Hadith of Intention

Umar Ibn Al-Khattab relates that he heard the Messenger of God صلى الله عليه و سلم  say : “Actions are but by intention and every man shall have but that which he intended. Thus he whose migration was for Allah and His messenger, his migration was for Allah and His messenger, and he whose migration was to achieve some worldly benefit or to take some woman in marriage, his migration was for that for which he migrated.” ~ Related by Bukhari and Muslim

This is an extremely comprehensive and rich Hadith of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم that reflects the core of the Islamic Faith.

Imam Bukhari selected the first hadith, ‘Innamal a’malu binniyat’ of Sahih Bukhari as an introduction to the whole collection to show the sincerity of purpose of the author. It reminds the reader that good and noble deeds inculcated by the Hadith found therein will only bear fruit if there is sincerity attached to their intentions and would be meaningless if the motive is not sincere.

A Prayer for Forgiveness by Prophet Muhammad, upon whom be peace.

people from obeying Allah the Creator we should plead with Him
to help them at the time of their needs during Iftar and Sehri
and draw the attention of the whole World and all human right
campaigners to see the kind of injustice perpetrated to these
innocent souls who are not terrorists or like other militant
groups.Their sins is nothing but unfortunately they believe in
only Allah Alone the Creator who has no Partners with anybody
now wanted to be like all other Muslims join the fast in the
Blessed Month of Ramadan but unfortunately they are stopped from
fasting according to reports we are not sure whether is true or
false. We hope the Country concerned should review their stance
and allow our bros and sisters to fast. May Allah accept our Dua
n we don't forget to make Dua for these innocent souls who want
practice desperately but deprived.

Say "My Lord pays attention to you only because of your invocation to Him". End of Surah Furqan Say O My slaves who have transgressed against themselves despair not of the Mercy of Allah verily Allah forgives all sins. Truly,He is Oft-Forgiving Most Merciful. Ramadan is the best time Duas are accepted especially during the time of Iftar and during the time of Sehri. It is an opportunity to be asking Allah begging Him sincerely from the core of our hearts. This kind of invocation may help our Duas be accepted immediately the more sincere we are the more likely it would be accepted. Remember first ten days of Ramadan is Rahmah the Mercy of Allah being given or showered and second ten days Maghfirah forgiveness and the last ten days Safety from Hell. May Allah accept all our ibadah and all other devotional activities during this Blessed Month of Ramadan.

We recite Dua at the beginning of the Fast. It means
"I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan."

I want to know when this dua is recited. If we recite it the day we
keep fast for, then this dua should be "for today" and not "for
tomorrow" Please clarify.

The mentioned duas are not authentic as they are not available in any book of Hadith.
But it is so common in people that they don't even know that these duas are not from any Hadith.

If they are authentic; then please mention the hadith Book and hadith number.
e.g Sahih Bukhair Hadith number 1234 etc.

Masha Allah one who is fasting will have two joys one at the time of breaking his/her fast and the other joy is at the time when he meets His Creator Allah (S.W.T) who said fasting is only for ME and is ME that will give its reward. So we should not forget to make the dua at the time of breaking the fast as we are busy preparing to break the fast. May Allah accept all our ibada duas and all the good things we intend in both Duniya and Akhirah.

brother this is not intention like when standing to pray 2 or 4 rakah for any prayer. This is a "dua" for beginning and ending the fast. Hope this clarifies your misunderstanding.

You are doing a great job! Keep up the work. Educate the Ummah!
Do not be discouraged by some negative comments. For those who do not believe ua then just dont say it. Nothing wrong in saying aloud or by heart your niyyat to fast. The intention has to be stated by heart or aloud. And what is wrong in letting Allah know why you fasted and thanking him for his sustenance?

Jazak Allahu Khair brother!!!!

I'm amazed that people would bicker over making dua before and after roza. Whether you believe in this or not is irrelevant. What you do in your life is more important. However, by arguing the point online you simply spread confusion, disbelief and discord among Muslims. I'm sure this is not your intention.

Having said this, you do have the right and obligation to find the truth. There is enough literature out there where you are to do the research and find the answers for yourself. If you find this too much work then I'm sure you will find someone locally to answer this question without the negative impact.

Your choices are simple. - find, follow or do Ijtihad.

Allah (SWT) has already shown us the right path. May He give us all the strength to walk this path ourselves and become a beacon of light for others.
