The Night when the Light enters your Heart
Ibn Abbas reports: The Prophet came toward us at speed when we sat down. We were alarmed by his speed as he walked towards us. When he reached us, he greeted us; he said: “I have come speedily to inform you about the Night of Power, but I forgot which night it is as I was coming to you. Therefore, seek it in the last ten nights.” Al-Adab Al-Mufrad with Full Commentary by Adil Salahi
Narrated 'Ubada bin As-Samit: The Prophet ﷺ came out to inform us about the Night of Qadr but two Muslims were quarreling with each other. So, the Prophet ﷺ said, "I came out to inform you about the Night of Qadr but such-and-such persons were quarreling, so the news about it had been taken away, yet that might be for your own good, so search for it on the 29th, 27th and 25th (of Ramadan). Sahih al-Bukhari 2023 (Book 32, Hadith 10)
Summary:
The hadith reported by Ibn Abbas above tells us that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is hurrying toward his companions and is excited about sharing the news about the Night of Power, but in his excitement and divine intervention, he is made to forget the exact date. So he advises the companions to seek it in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
Sahih al-Bukhari 2023 (Book 32, Hadith 10) also suggests avoiding any distractions during these nights and seeking it in the odd nights.
The Night of Power, or Laylat al-Qadr is called so because it is a night of immense spiritual significance and blessings. The essence of this Night is the revelation of the first verses of the divine book sent down from the heavens to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ for all humanity.
The Quran teaches us how to recognize our creator. It is a comprehensive code of conduct and guidance for humanity toward righteous conduct and a virtuous way of life. It stresses the importance of submission to Allah and the performance of good deeds, including compassion, justice, and generosity toward others.
This night is described in the Qur'an as being superior to a thousand months, and believers are advised to spend it, or a significant portion of it, in devotion, prayer, glorification of God, and recitation and understanding of the Qur'an. Despite the importance of this night, the Prophet did not specify its exact date but rather instructed his followers to seek it out in the last ten nights of Ramadan.
This Night is about seeking knowledge of the Quran and connecting with our creator.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of the Night of Power. Surah Al-Qadr (The Power) describes it as a night that is better than a thousand months (Quran, 97:3).
Muslims are encouraged to engage in worship, supplication, and Quran recitation during these nights in the hope of earning the immense rewards and blessings that come with letting the light of the Quran enter our hearts.
