North America & Europe

According to Fiqh Council of North America (FCNA) the first day of Ramadan 1445 is on Monday, March 11, 2024, insha'Allah.

The Fiqh Council of North America recognizes astronomical calculation as an acceptable Shar'i method for determining the beginning of Lunar months, including the months of Ramadan and Shawwal. FCNA uses the criteria of the European Council of Fatwa and Research (ECFR), which are that somewhere on the globe, at the sunset, the elongation should be at least 8 degrees and moon should be at least 5 degrees above horizon. If these conditions are met, then it is certain that the moon is above the horizon and will be visible somewhere on the globe. Hence the new lunar month will start the next day, otherwise, it will start on the day following next. On the basis of this, the dates of Ramadan and Eidul Fitr are established.

Ramadan 1445 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at 9:00 Universal Time. On that day, the elongation is more than 8 degrees and moon is more than 5 degrees above the sun everywhere in North America. Hence, the first day of Ramadan will be on Monday, March 11, 2024, insha’Allah.

Eidul-Fitr 1445 AH: The Astronomical New Moon is on Monday, April 8, 2024 at 18:21 Universal Time. On April 8, there is no place on earth where at sunset the elongation is 8 degrees and moon is 5 degrees above the sun. Hence the first day of Shawwal will be on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, insha’Allah.

According to Australian National Imams Council (ANIC), the month of Ramadan for 1445H - 2024 will commence on Tuesday, 12th of March 2024.

On Monday, 11th of March, in Sydney, the sun will set at 7.18pm (AEST), while the moon will appear on the same day after sunset for 36 minutes until 7.54pm, where it will disappear thereafter from the horizon. In Perth, the sun will set on Monday at 6.38pm (AWST) and the moon will appear on the same day after sunset for 41 minutes until 7.19pm, where it will disappear thereafter from the horizon. This allows sufficient time to sight the new moon of the Month of Ramadan 1445H.
