This lecture once again steps back to take a look at a general topic, that of the notion of creation of the universe, as noted in the Quran and the Bible.  It is clarified that although we take it for granted that the universe had a beginning, consistent with its creation, this idea actually represented a complete revolution in the scientific thinking of the prior two thousand years, where the universe had been assumed to be static and eternal.  The notion of a beginning to the universe, although part of monotheistic religious traditions, was rejected by science until Einstein’s General Theory of Relativity and the discovery of the expanding universe by Edwin Hubble.  Hence, the fact that the Quran states clearly that the universe was created should be appreciated for the revolutionary and bold statement, in scientific terms, which it was.
