Los Angeles: 'Call to Prayers' Echoes in Ramadan

For the first time, a historic event took place for Muslims of Southern California at sunset on May 14, 2020 (21 Ramadan 1441 AH) in Los Angeles County, California - the most populous metropolitan county in United States.

In Culver City, California permission was given for evening Call to Prayers (Adhan) over an outdoor loud speaker from the rooftop of the King Fahad Mosque.  Insh'Allah, the Adhan will be called everyday for sunset prayers (Maghrib) for the last ten days in the month of Ramadan.

Ramadan is the holiest month for followers of the Muslim faith.  It’s a time of prayer and fasting – and those prayers typically happen inside a mosque.  However, this year during Ramadan all mosques in Southern California are closed for congregational prayers due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Community and city leaders in Culver City are going the extra mile to make sure those who observe Ramadan are safe. The Culver City mosque is using their YouTube channel to live stream the Call to Prayers (Adhan).  Anyone witnessing the evening Call to Prayers from the streets outside the mosque are asked to follow city guidelines for the health and safety of the public by wearing masks and maintaining proper social distancing.

Worshippers are offering prayers at home with special supplications for relief from this pandemic that has resulted in over 88,000 deaths in the United States.  California coronavirus cases now top 75,000, nearly half of them in Los Angeles County.

About King Fahad Mosque

The Ibn Taymiyah Foundation has supervised the project of King Fahad mosque in Culver City, Los Angeles County since its commencement. It is responsible for management and future activities. The establishment of this foundation dates back to 1980 (1400 AH). Its activities began in the “Muslim Student House” in the city’s western part.
