Ramadan Kareem to all!

Some mosques and communities may observe different criteria for determining the start of the lunar month. Please confirm with your local moon-sighting authorities to determine when to start Ramadan.

Ramadan 1435 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on June 27, 2014 (Friday) at 8:08 a.m. Universal Time (11:08 a.m. Makkah time). Sunset at Makkah on June 27 is at 7:07 p.m., while moonset is at 7:08 p.m. Moon is born before sunset in Makkah and moonset is after sunset. Therefore first day of Ramadan is June 28, 2014 (Saturday), insha'Allah. First Tarawih prayer will be on Friday night.

Eid ul-Fitr 1435 AH:
The Astronomical New Moon is on July 26, 2014 (Saturday) at 22:41 Universal Time. (1:41 a.m. on July 27, Makkah time). On July 26, Saturday, sunset at Makkah is 7:03 p.m. and moonset is 6:33 p.m. Moon is born after sunset in Makkah and moon sets before sunset. On July 27, Sunday, sunset at Makkah is 7:02 p.m. and moonset is at 7:14 p.m. Moon is born before sunset, while moonset is after sunset. Therefore, first day of Shawwal, i.e., Eid ul-Fitr is July 28, Monday, insha'Allah.

Mosques Around the World

The Great Mosque in Xian is one of the oldest, largest and best-preserved Islamic mosques in China and is located in the Shaanxi (Shensi) province in the central part of Mainland China.

According to historical records engraved on a stone tablet inside, this mosque was built in 742 during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The mosque was renovated in later periods, especially during the reign of Emperor Hongwu of the Ming Dynasty. The entirely Chinese construction and architectural style shows how Muslims adapted to various cultures.

Tradition says the Great Mosque was founded by the naval admiral Cheng Ho, son of a prestigious Muslim family who became famous for leading some of the largest sea expeditions of the time reaching all the way to North America. Muslims played an important role in the unification of China during the Yuan and Ming Dynasties.

Thanks for posting everything in such detail. I am living in US for almost 2 decades and
each year I feel hesitated to start my fasting as always conflicting information comes from
different Islamic organizations and communities. I was checking ISNA website for years
and unfortunately it also failed to eliminate confusion. In these days of modern technology
this is very unfortunate. This is the first time I am having such confirmation and could fast
with peace of mind. Jazakallah khair. May Allah bless us all and make the fasting easy for
us.

New moon is the day when the moon is completely out of sight.
Muslims need to sight the moon which is possible only after the new moon day. Please refer to NASA's website also to verify about new moon ( technically it should be called "No Moon")
