Hurricane Ida has reached the Louisiana coast as one of the most powerful storms ever to hit the US. The now category four storm made landfall just southwest of New Orleans.

The US National Hurricane Center says Ida is tearing through the state with sustained winds of up to 240 kilometers an hour. US officials say they are expecting catastrophic impacts from the storm and are warning it could take weeks to restore power to hard-hit areas.

This hurricane arrives on the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated the region. The National Hurricane Center has warned of tidal surges, torrential rains and flooding.
