COMMENTARY on 17:92
A. Yusuf Ali:

Translation:
"Or you cause the sky to fall in pieces, as you sayest (will happen), against us; 2294 or you bring Allah and the angels before (us) face to face; 2295
Commentary:

2294  Contrast the sublime passages with 82:1, or that in 25:25, where the final breaking up of the firmaments as we know is referred to in the world's catastrophe, with the ridiculous demand that it should be done for the sport of the sceptics!

2295  Cf. 2:55 and 4:153 about the desire of the Israelites to see Allah face to face; and 6:8-9, about angels coming down to convince men.

Muhammad Asad:

Translation:
or thou cause the skies to fall down upon us in smithereens, as thou hast threatened, 108 or [till] thou bring God and the angels face to face before us,
Commentary:
108  Lit., "claimed": possibly a reference to the warning expressed in 34:9, which was revealed somewhat earlier than the present surah.
