There
is a time of night when the whole world transforms. During the day, chaos often
takes over our lives. The responsibilities of work, school, and family dominate
much of our attention. Other than the time we take for the five daily prayers,
it is hard to also take time out to reflect or even relax. Many of us live our
lives at such a fast pace, we may not even realize what we're missing.
But
there is a time of night when work ends, traffic sleeps, and silence is the only
sound. At that time-while the world around us sleeps-there is One who remains
awake and waits for us to call on Him. We are told in the hadith qudsi:
"Our Lord descends during the last third of each night to the lower heaven,
and says: 'Is there anyone who calls on Me that I may respond to him? Is there
anyone who asks Me that I may give unto him? Is there anyone who requests My
Forgiveness that I may forgive him?'" (Bukhari and Muslim)

In
a recent khutbah, I heard Allah's divine name, Al-Afoo,
The Pardoner, and a very touching qudsi hadeeth that exemplified it:
A
servant [of Allah's] committed a sin and said: "O Allah! Forgive me
my sin." And Allah said: "My servant has committed a sin and
acknowledged he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes them."
Then the man sinned again and said: "O Lord! Forgive me my sin.'
And Allah said: "My servant has committed a sin and acknowledged he
has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes them." Then the man
sinned again and said: "O Lord! Forgive me my sin." And Allah
said: "My servant has committed a sin and acknowledged he has a
Lord who forgives sins and punishes them. [My slave!] Do what you wish,
for I have forgiven you!" (Bukhari and Muslim) |

Future
of Catholic/Muslim relations |
|
As Jorge Mario Bergoglio takes on his new title Pope Francis I, one of his many challenges will be to foster relations with Islam. Preceding him, Pope Benedict XVI offended Muslims in a 2006 speech quoting an emperor who called Islam an evil religion.

Belief
A
believer with perfect faith is one who struggles to spend his life
and property in the cause of God. And the second rank is one
who is engaged in prayer in some corner and from whom people are
safe.

Muhammad
