Forgiveness: A Prophetic Example

The compelling conditions of our time offer human society two paths to choose from. We will either continue past enmities and stereotypes, or we will learn how to live in peaceful coexistence. It is a world of global connectedness, and in order to make peace sustainable, we need to develop new paradigms of peaceful engagement. The example of the Prophet Muhammad presents us with many such paradigms that we can adapt to our current circumstances.

Who on Earth is Faultless?

Allah the Almighty makes clear that people who make mistake, but then return to Him in sincerity and ask for forgiveness, will be forgiven. As long as believers are sincerely sorry for what they have done, they must never lose hope in Allah�s mercy regardless of the sin�s magnitude. This truth is emphasized in the following verse: �My servants, you who have transgressed against yourselves, do not despair of Allah�s mercy. Truly Allah forgives all wrong actions. He is the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. (Az-Zumar 39:53)

Forgiveness

The Prophet said: �All the children of Adam constantly err, but the best of those who constantly err are those who constantly repent.� We come to the next stage of gaining tranquility. Sometimes we don�t know why we feel down. We talked about al-Jabbar, and how we should go to Allah to help mend our broken hearts. But sometimes it�s more than that � it is the heavy weight of sins on our hearts. This topic may make us uncomfortable, because it is something we don�t like to be reminded of. It is difficult to think of and face up to our sins � and it makes us even more depressed!
