Professor of theology, theologian and philosopher, researcher of Islamic philosophy, writer. He was born in 1947 in the Besni district of Adıyaman. At the age of 6, he started to learn the Quran and Arabic from his father. In 1955, he went to Urfa and studied at private madrasas teaching Arabic and religious sciences in the classical style. He tried to complete his education.
In 1961, he received his primary school diploma and entered the Maraş Imam Hatip School, graduated in 1968 and started to work as the Preacher of Keşan District of Edirne in the Presidency of Religious Affairs. In the same year, he won the Istanbul Higher Islamic Institute and was appointed as the Minister of Üsküdar, Istanbul.
After graduating from Istanbul Higher Islamic Institute in 1972, he completed his undergraduate education in Philosophy, which he started in the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, in 1977. In the same year, he started his doctorate studies at Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Philosophy, Department of History of Turkish-Islamic Thought.
In 1980, the Head of the History of Turkish-Islamic Thought at the Department of Philosophy at Istanbul University, Prof. Dr. Nihat Keklik, he received the title of Doctor of Philosophy with his thesis titled "Pythagoras and Presocratic Philosophers in the Light of Islamic Sources and Philosophers".
He started his academic career as an Assistant of Philosophy and Logic at the Istanbul Higher Islamic Institute in 1977, and continued as Assistant Professor and Head of theology Department after these institutions were transformed into the Faculty of Theology in 1982.
In 1984, he went to Paris and conducted scientific research on the effects of Islamic thought on Western thought for a year. He continued his duty as the Head of the Department of Islamic Philosophy at Marmara University Faculty of Theology for nearly 12 years until he retired voluntarily in 2008. After his retirement, Bekir Karlıdağ founded Bahçeşehir University Civilization Studies Center (MEDAM), Turkey's first academic civilization research center. In the same year, he was appointed as the Advisor to the Prime Minister and the Head of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations Turkey Coordination Board. In this context, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Foundation University established the Alliance of Civilizations Institute (MEDIT). He focused his research on the formation and development of Islamic thought and its contributions to universal thought, and conducted research on the effects of Islamic thought on Western thought for one year in Paris. He has a total of about forty copyrighted and translated works, primarily Fi Zilal'il Qur'an and Ibn Kathir commentaries, and Tehafütü'l Felasife and Faslu'l Makal translations. prof. Dr. Bekir Karlığı participated in many international meetings both in Turkey and abroad, also directed many master's and doctoral theses and served as a jury member in many theses.
