Saalam,
Taraweh is not Fard, but this is a practice done everywhere else not just in Pakistan. I believe it is Sunnah to finish the entire Quran before Ramadan. Sadly, Pakistan (also the entire sub-continent) has a lot of 'self invented practice' that are completely alien to the Sahabas and their generation. All in the name of Islam. |

Pakistan for the past twenty to thirty years a new religious practice has emerged with the name of Khatm-e-Quran in the Taraveeh prayers of Ramazan considered to be a must for every mosque. Some mosques that have the more speedy Hafizs do finish the khatam in a few days while generally it takes for the somewhat slower speedy qaris fifteen days to narrate the whole of Quran Majeed. For this practice the masses attached to mosques consider it their duty to provide a well learned and faster Qari for their respective mosques for the month. For the purpose The Huffaz are hired for the month and often provided best facilities too. Though some Huffaz do recite the verses of Quran in normal manner but most of them do go through the delicacy of the speech of the Holy Quran and say the prayers in the manner that speaks out that the practice is just meant to finish and end up the desired task. That never seems like a prayer offered before God Almighty but a celibrity to be ended as sooner as possible or a burden to be put off as quickly as possible.
This all is injustice to the glory and honour of the Holy Book of Quran as it has been its order to be recited in full prescribed manner. (Wa rattilul Qur'aana tarteela). Moreover, there is no specification of reciting the Holy book as a whole for any prayer. It is good to recite for blessing but to make is as a compulsory practice for Taraveeh is totally a 'Bid'at' or self invented religious practice. |
