Alaykumus Salaam
Beyond the translation, actually the meaning of the "Master & Slave" relationship is the correct one. But this relationship can not be understood with the current understanding of "Sovereign Lord & Creation" relationship. In the system as I understand it - anyone who strifes with the utmost effort and sincerety can achieve the master title of the spiritual world.
In chapter 53 Muhammad was a slave of Jibril. Jibril was a teacher who tought Muhammad from the start as he was a rookie in a spiritual world. But in chapter 39:53 Muhammad was already higher up, as a master to others.
The spiritual world is not the system of election where the ruler is elected by the masses. Shunning the money is not an easy choice, while people today incline to chose someone with wealth. In the spiritual world the road is freely open for anyone who want to walk on it. Arriving at the far end is not achieved by being elected. He/she has to walk or run into it. Slow walker will be outrun by the fast one.

w/salam sister,
Mostly u will find christians asking such questions, reason behind it is they hv not really read their Bible. Most the explanations hv been given by other brothers. For better understanding, i would like u to give ur christian friend following verses from Bible James 1:1 "...a SLAVE of God and of the Lord JESUS CHRIST..." Corinthians 7:22 "For he who as a SLAVE was summoned in [to union with] the Lord is a freedman of the Lord, just so he who was free when he was called is a bond servant of CHRIST (the Messiah)." Matthew 4:10 "You shall worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve." Ephesians 6:6 "..but as servants (SLAVES) of CHRIST, doing the will of God heartily and with your whole soul." Romans 1:1 "From Paul, a bond SLAVE of JESUS CHRIST (the Messiah)..." 2 Peter 1:1"...a SLAVE and apostle of JESUS CHRIST...". Romans 6:18 "Ye became the servant of righteousness." p.s:. Also a fact tht ur Christian friend shld know tht the original writings of the Bible uses the word "SLAVE", and not "SERVANT". The King James version and many other translations translated the word "SLAVE" as "SERVANT." Edited by Honzo - 12 January 2009 at 9:49pm |

Wa'laikum salam wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu
May Allah swt help you and your husband in dawah. You may get to answer many such questions of him. Am sure, inshaAllah, you shall handle them with hikmah and patience. I pray Allah swt to guide him towards the path of truth, thru both of you.
Yes sister, we are all slaves of Allah. Ibadah is derives from Abd, which means slave. We are all slaves of Allah swt, i.e we submit ourselves to Allah swt. But this slavery is out of love and respect for Alllah swt. How does a slave stand before his master ? Its with respect and humbleness. He's ready to take up any command of his master. Likewise we muslims are slaves of Allah. He is our Creator. We submits ourselves to Allah swt and acts to the commands of Allah swt with obedience and subservience. And this submission shud be total submission. It shud not be like partly followed and partly not. Also let him know that this Master of ours loves us many times more than a mother. He is The Merciful, Kind.
Anyways we regard Allah swt as our master and are to obey only Him, fear only Him ----.

Wa Alaikum Salam sister. From my knowledge, this is the correct translation. I tried to go through some of the Arabic-English lexicon's online, but I couldnt locate it..it was so vast. The signifigance of the word slave is that we strive not to be slaves of our desires, other human beings..but the slaves of the One True God. An attribute of a slave is that he obeys his Master. This is also the reason slave is used because our Master is Allah. Ma'Sha'Allah, I helped you.

Asalamualaikum...
Yesterday a christian saw a copy of Quran(along with english translation) in my home and asked if he can have a look.my husband gave Quran to him and while he was reading from it and then suddenly he whispers..."what a harsh language".we were struck.we asked him the reason and he replied that Why Allah has called you believers as "slaves",he was referring to the translation of the word "Abd or Ibaad".we tried our best to explain that it is a translation of the word and by It Allah is calling not only believers but you non-believers too,and not as slaves but as HIS best creations, but how could i make him feel the intense love and how it feels to believers when our Allah refer to us as "Ya Ibadi "...!
Ultimately my husband ended up telling him that yes we are slaves to Allah and we don't see any humiliation in it.But it hurted me that i/we couldn't explain to him.i sincerely regret on my poor knowledge.
Please tell me is the word"slave"exact translation of the arabic word "Abd".
