Actually 'inna lillah..' is not only for death news... it can be said for anything that is painful or sad or a discomfort.
When a muslim suffers (even if its a small suffering) and they say 'To Allah we belong and unto Him we return' (translation of Inna lillah) - it is like a reminder that anything painful/sad in this world is temporary... and eventually we all shall return to Allah... so fret not, its insignificant :) So yes, we can say it whenever we deem it fit. Be it on anybody's death or any suffering. BTW on a seperate note, it is also sunnah to pay respect for the dead. It is sunnah to stand up when a funeral passes by... and Prophet Muhammad even stood up for the funeral of a Jew. So yes, we can grieve for anyone... regardless of faith. However we are not supposed to ask for maghfirah of those who died in shirk. |

Salam,
Yes, it is sunnah to say "Inalillahi wa ina illaihi rajiun" (Everthing come from from God and will return to him) if somebody pass away, muslim or non muslim. Again it is a sunnah, not mandatory. You say it is good, not say it is OK.
