Schmikbob your question is a moral issue, therefore will an answer from an Islamic perspective be helpful? Additionally, I assume when you say 'nothing but pain' you are not speaking metaphorically, and you mean physical illness and the like. Anyway, although suicide is forbidden in Islamic law, there is a compelling argument amongst Muslim scholars that suicide be viewed on a situational basis as you suggested, but with respect to punishment or forgiveness in the next life.

Can someone help me understand why wanting to end life, a life that is nothing but pain, is forbidden. I understand the desire to hold life sacred. I also understand the slippery slope argument. However, on a case by case basis, why is suicide unacceptable?
