Heather, hello and welcome. I suggest simply sticking to normal greetings, hi, hello, good morning, etc. Once you've broken the ice, upon leaving just say "salaams" and have a nice day.

Hello, my name is Heather and I live in Orlando, FL, USA. I am trying to educate myself so I can treat Muslims I encounter with appropriate respect. Please forgive me if my questions are ignorant in any way because that is the opposite of my intentions.
I was reading about the appropriate way to greet a Muslim and I found "As-Salam-u-Alaikum". I'd love to use that (if it's correct), but realistically speaking, it may be months before I encounter a Muslim person and I may not remember how to say it. I certainly don't want to be disrespectful by saying it wrong or accidentally saying something completely different! Can I say "Peace be with you" instead? Thank you for reading. :) |
