It is due to the earth being a sphere. If you take a globe (the sphere map thingy https://www.amazon.co.uk/Exerz-Educational-Medium-Swivel-Globe/dp/B014TL44FM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1522514612&sr=8-3&keywords=globe) and a rubber band and get the rubber band to be around the whole globe such that it is going through your position, Mekka and the whole band is around the fattest bit if the earth then you will see why the shortest rout is in that direction. |

Muslim scholars have a consensus that the direction of the Qibla should be the shortest distance between where one is and the Kaaba. Muslim scholars determined that the north east is the shortest distance between North America and Makkah, hence they decided on this direction.

Salam Dr. Aslam,
We are in the USA use north east as qiblah (direction for muslim to pray). But if we see on the map, Makkah is south east of the USA. Why is that (why the qiblah for people in the USA is not south east)? Thanks |
