Assalamu Alaikum: I used to work with a large financial institution. It was my job to handle the 401k plans, then I moved up to QDROs (Qualified Domestic Relations Order), for people divorcing and dividing up their assets, and roll overs in general. A roll over is when someone takes retirement funds from one account and moves it into another account without removing any of the funds. I know there are some Islamic based investment houses and portfolios now available, so I don't know how this affects them, perhaps they work differently. Having given that disclaimer, I can say, whenever you order a purchase for stock, the purchase is not real-time, so for whatever waiting period there is, and it might not be long, your money is put into a STIF account. STIF stands for: Short Term Investment Fund, and these accounts earn interest. They all do. And, they are earning interest on a continual basis, it never stops. So, even if the money sits there for only 15 minutes, you would have earned a percentage of interest for that 15 minutes. As I said, I don't know how the Islamic services handle this, but any investing outside of a service that bypasses STIF would be haram as you are earning some portion of interest, however tiny. Salaams. Edited by Mishmish |
