The ancient healing wisdom of flowers:

by Anmaya Milner

Remember sitting in the garden, on a balmy summer evening, listening to the hum of the bees, and watching the colourful dance of the butterflies?

Remember the heady perfume that wafted in the air, and that delicious feeling of tranquillity, and aaahhh letting go of your day?

Did the wonder of it all touch you as you sat there - the wonder that those beautiful, nodding heads were the instigators of this scene? The bees collecting their pollen, the butterflies feeding, their perfume and colour, relaxing your senses. Such a healing place to be. It is no wonder that you are drawn here.

Some of these flowers are ancient. Gurudas, in his book on flower essences, says that they go back to Lemurian times, created to support human and spiritual development.

Dr Bach is revered for discovering flower essences, but really he re-discovered them, or brought them to the attention of the Western world. Plants have been known for their healing properties for aeons, and flower healing has been used by indigenous people for centuries.

Aborigines use flowers in healing

Australian Aborigines are known to use flowers in healing ceremonies - a knowing they have that certain flowers are good for specific illnesses. In Tibet, some monks are taught to use flowers for healing, the flowers being soaked in a bucket of water, and then poured over the patient, as part of a healing process. This can only be done by a monk who has spent years purifying himself in arduous spiritual practices.

Today the aroma of flowers is caught in essential oils, and widely used therapeutically. Herbal medicine has regained popularity, as well as the giving of flowers in grief, sickness or celebration. Healing gardens, and horticultural therapy are newer ways of working with the healing properties of flowers.

But when we think of the ancientness of flowers, we can begin to understand their healing power. They hold within their blueprint a key to the wisdom, purity, and perfection that was created at the time we took form as physical beings. If we continue to use those flowers which still grow in the wild, or unchanged by human hand, then we can still have access to this original pure blueprint.

We all have a unique blueprint

But how does this help us, you may ask. Every physical form has a unique blueprint. We each, as we know, have a unique fingerprint. No-one else on the whole planet has the same one. This is also true of our whole selves. We have our own energy pattern, our own physical form, smell, sound, etc. When this pattern is disturbed by trauma, or an environmental discord, for example, we begin to feel uneasy in some way, no longer in harmony with ourselves. Of course, most of us can't see this, but we certainly feel it, in some way.

Each of those gentle, nodding beings, has its own therapeutic quality, because each has a particular blueprint. All we need do therefore, is to choose the appropriate blueprint (flower) to suit the disharmony in our energy pattern.

For example, everyone knows lavender. Its energy pattern will bring calm to an uneasy or stressed energy. We could give a person lavender tea, or use lavender oil, but the flower essence has the highest vibration of all the unseen healing the unseen. It has the blueprint suspended in water, untouched by human hand or mechanical process. Dr. Richard Gerber confirms this in his research into vibrational medicine, when he compares the efficacy of vibrational medicines.

Simple to use at home

Flower essences are gentle but profound healers, gifts from the nature kingdom, that attend to the cause as well as the symptoms. They are simple to use at home, by comparing their description to the symptoms. For example, walnut is wonderful for a child starting school, a pet moving to a new home, or transplanting a much beloved plant. It supports a graceful transition in whatever circumstances.

On a deeper level, when used by a practitioner, they can address old disharmony that disrupts our lives today, such as childhood trauma.

So next time you are sitting in your garden, see if you can get a sense of the healing quality of a particular flower. Which one does your eye go to first why that particular flower? What is it saying to you? Perhaps there is a healing message there for you.
