Shaykh Qardawi Approves of Celebrating Mawlid
"Actually, celebrating the Prophet's birthday means celebrating the birth of Islam..." -- Shaykh Yusuf Al-Qardawi
Sheikh Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, in replying to the question on whether Mawlid should be celebrated replied: We all know that the Companions of the Prophet

Unfortunately, such celebrations include some innovations when they should actually be made to remind people of the Prophet's life and his call. Actually, celebrating the Prophet's birthday means celebrating the birth of Islam. Such an occasion is meant to remind people of how the Prophet lived. Allah Almighty says: "Verily in the Messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the last Day, and remembereth Allah much." (Al-Ahzab: 21) We need all these lessons and such celebrations are a revival of these lessons and values. I think that these celebrations, if done in the proper way, will serve a great purpose, getting Muslims closer to the teachings of Islam and to the Prophet's Sunnah and life.
As for celebrating `Ashooraa', the Prophet As for the second part of the question [what is exact birth date of the Prophet [ Source: Mufti Islam Online Fatwa Committee Date: 19/Apr/2001 ] May Allah bless Shaykh Al-Qardawi for asserting the truth!

Qardhawi has only emphasised on the revival of the events and life history of the holy prophet s.a.w.s. We have no order in the Quran to celebrate the birthday of the prophet. It is not any obligatory prayer, nor is it in the Sunnah. If the holy prophet had celebrated any one's birthday, then only it could be relevant to celebrate his birthday. But it appears that the prophet never indulged in any such thing. Qardhawi is also telling that the life of the holy prophet should be discussed. It is useless to adopt something showing the love of the prophet in a cheap way and not to ever act on his greater teachings. Do the Muslims think that they will get away with such things easily. In the present times when the western media is making cartoons and films of the prophet, it is necessary to be united and to highlight the life of the prophet s.a.w.s. instead of roaming in the streets with flags and chanting slogans. If any of the four Imams had advised celebrating the B.Day of the prophet (And he must have celebrated it himself) then it would have been alright for the present day muslims to follow the practice. Until then there is no need to do what is being planned and done on the 12th Rabi Awwal. |

No one has argued that mawlid is ordered. It is an act that is voluntary. The Quran does not have to explicitly, or implicitly order something for it to be meritorious. The Islamic sciences are not ordered by the Quran, neither is putting the Quran in a bound book form, or placing vowels for purposes of recitation along with the mustaf ordered by the Quran.
It is more than that. The matter at hand is how we remember the birth. That is "mawlid", recognizing the birth and remembering it.
This is a non sequitur. The four schools find the act permissible, the four Imams established the methodologies for deriving fiqh, and the four schools have all agreed on mawlid. So your conclusion simply does not follow. |
