Many american foods that i may have eaten a long time ago are now haraam. Things such as food with cholesterol. I now eat basic foood in which i know is halal. There is many halal food markets in my neighborhood, but is it haraam to eat meat period unless it comes from the muslim owned store??

If, in your knowledge the supermarket meat is not halal, then yes, you should make sure the vender is muslim, and that the meat he is selling is zabiha (ie slaughtered acc. to islamic rites).

Salaams,

How did you arrive that foods with cholesterol are haram? Just curious

Assalamu alaikum,

Cholesterol as substance is not haram however if you think or the doctor say that this is not good for your body (i.e you already have high colesterol in your blood), just avoid it.

Asalaamu alaikum;

I have always referred to the following Ayats as narrated by our Imam for following this,

:3 forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked the name of other than Allah. that which hath been killed by strangling, or by a violent blow, or by a headlong fall, or by being gored to death; that which hath been (partly) eaten by a wild animal; unless ye are able to slaughter it (in due form); that which is sacrificed on stone (altars); (forbidden) also is the division (of meat) by raffling with arrows: that is impiety. This day have those who reject faith given up all hope of your religion: yet fear them not but fear Me. This day have I perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion. But if any is forced by hunger, with no inclination to transgression, Allah is indeed Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. -  English

16:115 He has only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and any (food) over which the name of other than Allah has been invoked. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. -  English

Assalamu alaikum,

Br. Jihadx, for halal or haram regarding food you should refer to the hadith and verse that posted by Sr.Mariyah.

However avoiding/reducing cholesterol in our diet is a good thing to do according current medical knowledge, because cholesterol have bad impact to someone's health such as artery blockage etc. So avoiding/reducing cholesterol in order to have a healthy body, Insha Allah part of a good deed. However it doesn't mean if you see muslim eating cholesterol you should stop them and yell "this is haram, brother, you should stop it".

Culturally, cuisine from the Muslim world (middle east, India, Indonesia), such as lamb, curry, milk, cheese, fried stuff have significant percentage of cholesterol. Moreover, there was a story, during his khalifah period, Umar ibn Khattab received portions of his salary as "lamb" (half lamb a day, something like that), on that time there was no technology to remove  cholesterol from meat. So cholesterol is part of the Muslims diet since Islam was born.

Finally, I suggest you keep going to the muslim store near your house so you help them to grow, if they are growing they can provide better quality of halal products, and also you have a healthy body. Lastly, Insha Allah we don't need to make Islam become "complicated' and "difficult".
