Asalam Alikum!
Both of my parents are Muslim, but they did not practice when I was younger. Since coming to college, I have gotten more involved in our religion. I am studying Arabic and can read the Qur'an in the Prophet's (PBUH) language. However, it is still difficult for me to understand...Does anybody have any recommendations for books/websites to help explain what I am reading? Shukran! -Akhi |

Wa Alaikum Asslam I hope I can help you. You need a good translation of Qura'an. I am sorry. I do not know any book that I am sure of all of it. They sometimes mix the right with the wrong. So just be careful. I am sure some members here can help you. |

Assalam alaikum akhi,
For tranlations you may refer to Yusuf Ali's, Muhammad Asad's both of which are available on this very site...just go to the Quran search option. You may read according to your requirements. Commentary is available too, that of Muhammad Asad. You may also read, Maulana Waheeduddin khan's translation, it is one of the simplest available. To get a background of what the Quran is and what you would be reading in there, you may read "An Introduction To Understanding The Quran", by Maulana Abul 'Ala Maududi...it is good for beginners. Well...I would like to congratulate you for trying to read the Quran and understanding it, may Allah strengthen your faith and bestow you with knowledge-ameen. May Allah guide us all, surely He guides whom He wills. |

Asslamu Alaikum Brother/sister Wisdomseeker, I hope you can add any link here. I need it too. As for reading Quraan in Arabic without knowing the meaning, here is a beautiful story about it. http://www.islamicity.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=15575 Edited by Full of Hopes - 03 December 2009 at 7:45am |

Assalam alaikum,
This book helped me understand much of the vocabulary and the more difficult expressions:
The compiler of this work was not a Muslim, and so on rare occasions he makes some uninformed remarks about Islam, but linguistically he does a good job. Edited by sufi_observer - 03 December 2009 at 4:29pm |

Assalam alaikum,
For the translations of the Quran on this very site, you may go to: http://www.islamicity.com/QuranSearch/ There you may choose, how you want to read the Quran, chapter wise, search verses, search topics and words.....it is extremely helpful. I am sorry, for the other books I recommended, I could not find them online....they must be purchased. But there is yet another good book, about the Quran, by Dr. Gary Miller (a muslim revert)..."The Amazing Quran", it can be read here: http://www.ymsite.com/books/amazing_quran.htm Hope this helps.. May Allah Guide us, surely He guides whom He wills. Edited by wisdomseeker - 04 December 2009 at 4:23pm |

Brothers and sisters,
Thank you all very much for your help. Ive just looked at some of your links and already things seems much clearer. One thing, though. I was under the impression that the Quran should not be translated from Arabic because that is the language Allah spoke when he revealed it to Muhammad (PBUH). Is this true? Are the translations inferior to the Arabic Quran? |
