Some Questions

Good day everyone.  I just enrolled on this site yesterday as a result of a recent desire to learn about Islam.  I have started reading english translations of quran and hadith, and am starting to form some questions from my reading.

 

1) As I understand the translation of the word Islam, I understand it to mean "Surrender, or submission, to god".  Is that a correct translation?  Is there a distinction here between surrendering to god and surrendering to Allah?  (more to this question in #2).

 

2) Allah is the word that represents the god of Islam.  When translated, literally, Allah means god in english.  Alas, my understanding is that the god of Islam is the same as the god of Christianity which is the same god as Judaism, albeit the differences being that we all have different messengers (aka prophets) and interpretations of gods word?  Is this a fair and accurate statement, or am I WAY off base?

 

3) I have read the english translations of quran Al-Fatiha, Al-Baqara and most of Al-E-Imran and a few other versus from others when cited in some of my reading.  My question are in the context of the word we here in media, 'Infidel', I have yet to read that word.  Does the quran refer to infidels?

 

4)  Although I have yet to encounter the word 'Infidel', the term non-believer is very prevelant.  Can you please describe to me how muslims interpret 'Non-believer'?  My current understanding is that a non-believer is someone who does not believe in Allah, and from question # 1 if Allah and god are one in the same, if I believe in god do I also believe in Allah?  Or must I be committed to the teachings of quran before I can claim I am a believer of Allah?
