Salam/Peace,
Every human being is make mistake/sins. So forgiveness is very important part in Islam. Perhaps if there is no forgiveness no one will eligible for paradise.
There are 2 type of sins in Islam, first sin caused by your bad act to other human being such as stealing somebody else property, heart someone feeling or physic. Second sins caused by your bad act to God (don't obey God's command), for example you don't do 5 daily prayers, you don't do fasting during Ramadan etc.
Because of these 2 type of sins, so there are 2 type of forgiveness:
- For mistakes/sins due to your bad act to God, you just need to ask forgiveness to God sincerely and promise to do your best not to do it again.
- For mistakes/sins due to your act to human being, before God's forgive you we are required to ask forgiveness to the person that you made mistake to. For example if you still someone property you have to return the stuff to her/him or ask her/his favor to forgive you for the stuff that you've taken. If you heart someone feeling or physic we should ask forgiveness to that person. So in this case this kind of sins/mistake we have to do both ask forgiveness to person and to God.
So from this we know that our behave to other human being is very important in Islam.
Islam also teach us to be forgiveful, in case somebody make mistake to you, and he/she realizes the mistake and sincerely asks forgiveness to you, we should forgive them.
Let me add very importan concept, in Islam to ask forgiveness to God we don't need anybody (saint or Imam etc) as a medium, we ask directly to God.

Is this forgiveness taught to be extended also to those outside of the Islamic faith when apology is made and forgiveness is asked? Or does it only apply to those of shared faith?

Quran 039.053 Say: O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. Quran 16:125-128 Invite all to the way of your Lord with wisdom and beautiful preaching. And argue with them in ways that are best and most gracious... And if you punish, let your punishment be proportional to the wrong that has been done to you. But if you show patience, that is indeed the best course. Be patient, for your patience is from God. And do not grieve over them, or distress yourself because of their plots. For God is with those who restrain themselves, and those who do good. Quran 42:36 Sahih International So whatever thing you have been given - it is but [for> enjoyment of the worldly life. But what is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who have believed and upon their Lord rely 42:37 And those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, and when they are angry, they forgive, Quran 42:40 Sahih International And the retribution for an evil act is an evil one like it, but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is [due> from Allah . Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers. Qur'an 42:43 Yusuf Ali But indeed if any show patience and forgive, that would truly be an exercise of courageous will and resolution in the conduct of affairs. Quran 7:199 Yusuf Ali Hold to forgiveness; command what is right; But turn away from the ignorant. Quran 24:22 Yusuf Ali Let not those among you who are endued with grace and amplitude of means resolve by oath against helping their kinsmen, those in want, and those who have left their homes in Allah's cause: let them forgive and overlook, do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? For Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. Quran 3:133 Pickthall And vie one with another for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a paradise as wide as are the heavens and the earth, prepared for those who ward off (evil); 3:134 Those who spend (of that which Allah hath given them) in ease and in adversity, those who control their wrath and are forgiving toward mankind; Allah loveth the good; |
