Assalamu Alaikum,
This is my first time fasting since I just recently converted, and I was wondering about when you can brush your teeth. I, along with alot of you probably, suffer from bad breath when I don't drink or eat anything for long periods of time. So I was wondering if we can only brush our teeth before and after fasting, or if its okay during the fast. |

As salam u Alaikum! Welcome brother in Islam! The bad breath from the mouth of a fasting person is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Every good deed of the son of Adam will be multiplied. He will receive ten-fold to seven hundred fold reward for a good deed. Allah the Glorious and Majestic has said 'but fasting is exceptional, for it is done for Me and I will give reward for it, since one abandons his passion and food for My sake. There are two occasions of joy for one who fasts, joy when he breaks it and joy when he meets his Lord; and the breath (of an observer of fast) is sweeter to Allah than the fragrance of musk." [Related by AI-Bukhari and Muslim]. I dont think its a goog idea to brush teeth while fasting, water may go in while rinsing.I meself brush during sahri, that is before fast starts. Was salam, Dayem. |

As Salamu Alaikum and welcome to Islam Amjed, I hope this is a good Ramadan for you and you learn alot. Personally, I think it is OK to brush your teeth while fasting but you must be extremely careful that nothing enters the throat. I know many scholars that agree with this opinion. |

Bismillah, Brush away, I say. Cleanliness vitalizes our faith. And if you still have bad breath, then remember the hadith about it. (Think about this, new brother. You are asking permission to brush your teeth! You know the right and best thing if you think about it, because Allah, SWT, led your brain and heart and soul to Islaam, and this issue is really something that is important to establish your faith and your Allah, SWT, given ability to reason.) |
