What is Islam? Islam is the religion which brings human being from the darkness of ignorance to the light of Islamic knowledge. Islam is based on the five sacred pillars which are mandatory on every believer to follow according to the prescribed conditions and no one can become a Muslim unless he testifies his faith which is called Shahadah and is the first and most important pillar of Islam.

These dictated exposures compose the Qur'an, Islam's holy book. Islam means “submission,” deriving from a root word that means “peace.” The word Muslim means “one who submits to Allah.”

ISLAM is derived from the Arabic root "SALEMA": peace, purity, submission and obedience. In the religious sense, Islam means submission to the will of God and obedience to His law.
Everything and every phenomenon in the world, other than man is administered TOTALLY by God-made laws i.e. they are obedient to God and submissive to His laws i.e. they are in the STATE OF ISLAM. Man possesses the quality of intelligence and choice, thus he is invited to submit to the good will of God and obey His law ie. become a Muslim. Submission to the good will of God, together with obedience to His beneficial law, i.e. becoming a Muslim is the best safeguard for man's peace and harmony.

 According to my limited understanding and knowledge, Islam comes in the category of religion but some Scholars claim that the term "Religion" refers to a specific "School of Thought".

 Now if we count "Islam" in the category of "Religion" according to what these Scholars say about the term "Religion", then I think we are doing injustice with Islam as Islam is not a "School of Thought" .

 Islam is not just a religion but it is more than a religion,it is a complete way of life or a comprehensive way of life.

 Islam is based on "common sense" and it is in complete harmony with nature.

 Islam defines the rights and responsibilities of every individual in regards to their relationship with God.

According to my personal opinion, Islam is not only a religion, Islam is a complete booklet of human beings having all things which are really beneficial for humans.
