I interpret the New Testament to mean this: Yes, the husband is supposed to be the head of the household, PROVIDED he is a Godly, righteous man. I know there is a scripture relating to this, but I've gone braindead....I'll find it soon. So IF the husband is a righteous man who is living according to God's will, then the wife should listen and learn from him. We are all also instructed many times by God to be faithful to Him, to honor, worship, and pray to him....ALL OF US, MEN AND WOMEN. The man is also told repeatedly to love, honor, and respect his wife, just as she is to do the same for him. It is a great plan which God made provided it is followed by both the husband and wife. It is a sort of "mutual admiration society", with the husband as the one who is to set the Godly example for all in the family to follow. If the husband is a low-life rat (we've all known them, haven't we), then of course God does not expect us to be submissive to them. If they beat the children, run around with prostitutes, get drunk, etc., God certainly does not expect the wife to follow that sorry example. Anyway, I truly believe God gave us a brain to use, and also common sense which tells us when something is "not quite right" in regards to marriage. (I'll be back when I find the verses I'm looking for.) God's Peace. |

There was a great show on PBS about putting people back in time, living as they did in previous eras. They had one about returning to Puritan Colonial living here in early US history. Women truly had in miserable. They were not allowed to speak in public, argue with their husbands, they wore hot, thick clothes all over. Made me glad to not live then. Patty, I can see what you are saying. But there can be no denying that women were always treated as 2nd class citizens in Christianity. You can go up through the Middle Ages, to lack of birth control, etc. Heck, a woman raped was ordered to marry the rapist! These of course are man-made laws. But if Jesus was there to liberate people, how in the world were women suppressed more? We can take for instance the witch hunts, which were nothng more then getting rid of women who had power. They were the teachers and the healers who had great influence in their communities. They burned at the stake and drowned many women labeled as 'witches.' You can say how you want to interpret the New Testement, that is not how it was interpreted by the Church officials. And no one can deny that the rights of women are clearly listed in the Quran. Whatever the message that Jesus was sent to give has been changed and damaged by humans.

Hayfa, Yes, truly, the Quran did alot to liberate woman. But, just like anything men will ignore what they need to in order to get what they want. Power. Look at the Taliban and those in Africa who use the Quran as an excuse to abuse their women. Forcing them to stay in their homes or worse to mutilate them. The problem is not with the scripture is those that would use the scripture and twist it for their own gain. That has always been the problem. God would never advocate the subjucation of his beloved daughters. But, Men (I mean this as a general term for MANKIND) are not perfect and are often corrupted by their own greed and lust for power. You look at the Puritan clothing with distain, the same I look at the burka with the same distain. I could not live my life through Casper the Friendly Ghost's wardrobe. |

When Omar had driven the Jews out of Chaibar and the Christians out of Najaran, he gave instructions to his generals against the Jews and Christians. These orders were called the covenant of Omar, and contained many restrictions against the people of the Book (Jews and Christians) In spite of this fact, the Jews felt themselves freer under the new rule of Islam than they did in the Christian lands. The restrictive laws of Omar were not carried out even during Omars lifetime, and though the fanatic [Muslims] scorned the Jews for their religion, they did not despise them as citizens, but showed great honor to worthy Jews. The first [Muslims] treated the Jews as their equals; they respected them as friends and allies, and took an interest in them even as enemies. The Asiatic and Egyptian Jews consequently treated the [Muslims] as their liberators from the yoke of the Christians [bold emphasis added] Serv Ref: Graetz, Heinrich, History of the Jews, Volume III, New York, George Dobsevage, 1927, pp. 87-88 Edited by Servetus |

Mishmish, you misinterpret scriptures. Put your questions up as separate topics and I will try to explain them to you one at a time, please. Women are not allowed to be priests in the Catholic church, but they have other roles and they are not silent ones. Protestant churches have pastors--head pastors who give sermons to all--men and women. Many of the pastors reach the title of "bishop." Women are not silent in the churches and are not subjective to men. Where have you been? Can a woman is Islam preach in front of both men and women? Annie |
