I am 3 weeks from having a precious little girl, and her father, my fiance, is
muslim. We plan on marrying as soon as it is possible and we realize that
we are in an unconventional situation for both faiths. I am Christian but
have agreed to let her be raised in Islam. I would like to know where to find
more information on procedures for new children. I know that he will be
shaving her head after 7 days and that he is sending money home to his
family to have a sheep sacrificed for her birth (that weirded me out a little at
first). I don't want to run into too many suprises along the way so I would
like some help in researching what is needed for small children. I have
researched the faith in general and know what is expected when she gets to
an age of understanding. Thanks for any help.

I've heard that one tradition is for the father to recite Al Fatiha into the ear of the baby right after birth.....and you don't have to worry about circumcision with a little girl.

Assalamu Alaikum:

When he shaves her head he should give away the weight of the hair in silver or gold as charity.

I think you are speaking of the aqiqa, the slaying of the lamb. But the tradition is that you eat part of the meat and then give the rest away. The aqiqa is not obligatory, but many Muslims do it.

There are many sites about children and Islam, and you can get lots of books about Islamic family life.

Try www.soundvision.com  or http://onlineislamicstore.com or my favorite because they do media mail shipping: http://islamicbookstore.com

Assalamu Alaikum:

It's from the Hadith:

Book 26, Number 26.1.2:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Jafar ibn Muhammad that his father said, "Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, weighed the hair of Hasan, Husayn, Zaynab and Umm Kulthum, and gave away in sadaqa an equivalent weight of silver."

Book 26, Number 26.1.3:

Yahya related to me from Malik from Rabia ibn Abi Abd ar-Rahman that Muhammad ibn Ali ibn al-Husayn said, "Fatima, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, weighed the hair of Hasan and Husayn, and gave away in sadaqa the equivalent weight in silver."
