salams

what is the actual defintion of hijaab. i get very confused by this concept. is it wearing a scarf over ur head so that ur head and shoulders are covered .

or can u wear a scarf to cover ur head only, i.e hair and ears not necessarily the shoulders'

during ramadaan i used to waer my scarf to cover my head , ears and shoulders and i got alot of negative comments . now i still wear a scarf but i dont tie it to cover my shoulders. just my head and ears. but i do dress modestly. i dont wear tight fitting . but i also wear jeans and long tops, i sometimes wear a bandenna to cover my hair. my hair is never exposed whikle im out of the house

now im not sure if im wearing hijaab or not. that is becos i have realised that i dont know what exactly hijaab means.

does wearing hijaab mean that ones ears and neck can never be exposed thus ones earing and necklace will not show. im confused by this now cos i love my jewellry and when i used to tie my scarf dupatta style, i never wore earings or a necklace

Assalamu Alaikum,

Here's what the Islamicity Imam(s) say about the issue and I feel it does
have credence.
"And say to the believing women to lower their gazes and guard their
chastity, and let them not display of their charm - except what is
apparent." (An-Nur: 31)

Commenting on the phrase, "what is apparent", Ibn `Abbas, the famous
Companion and the Qur'an exegete, said, "It means face and hands." In
other words, according to Ibn `Abbas, a woman must cover all her body
except her face and hands while in the presence of men who are not
related to her directly (and the list of those in whose presence she need
not cover is clearly outlined in Surat An-Nur: 31).

I used to cover my hair in the way you described. That was kind of my
first step towards what is considered "regular" hijab, if you catch my
meaning. :) I felt that my hair would slip out of the bottom in the back
and the sides near the ears. But at the same time I do feel if you're still
doing that for Allah (swt) then it is good. Just listen to your heart. I did
get a lot of questions from people when I wore my hijab that way. They
would often ask if I had cancer. Actually, I still get asked that from time to
time even with the way I cover now.
You do raise a lot of good points and I too am still not always clear on
how to answer it. Allah knows best.

Smile
