I'd like to make this thread for those of you who are knowledgable about the political world. I'd like to know, since the term of the "Evil One" is almost over who would you like to lead the U.S and why? I'm REALLY interested in brother Whispers comment since he has shown to be quite knowledgeable about world politics especially more so than myself. But to other members I'd like to know what are your views concering the next presedential election. The reason I'm asking is because I'm on the fence and haven't really been keeping up on the events. Dosn't matters who leads US, US will always act like super power by securing resources needed for its survival. I hope Russia rises again or China catches up;

WHOA! Israfil you've opened up a hornet's nest!
Questions come to mind, such as what makes you think the rest of the world will need to care who is the next US president? meaning, things are so bad for the US that credibility and clout have sunk to new lows. In economic terms it looks like the US has entered a new cycle of recession, so your economy isn't going to weald the power it once did. Although your recession will trigger Europe's. Unfortunately for me, that means Spain, who sports the world's largest extrenal debt, second only to yours! Politically, the guys and gals in Washington have their heads up somewhere where the sun don't shine and have yet to see the writing on the wall. Before I write reams, I'll try and stick with the MainStream and assume everything will run as it should, and you will be faced with a choice of Rich White Men to choose as your President. If, by some flick of a wand, Senator Hilary becomes the Democrat's candidate, I will be sunk in an existential dilemma. It would be such an amazing event that a woman run for US president that I would ocassionally have to overlook the fact that she is not the best candidate. Barak Obama is, I am wondering whether they will become a tandem: Clinton Presidential Candidate and Barak her Vice (so to speak!) I have yet to see a strong candidate from the bottom of the Republican oil-stained barrel and I am suspicious that Bush-Cheney may in fact create a situation whereby they declare the 2008 elections cancelled. For this, all they need is something similar to 9/11 on home soil, or a nuclear strike at someone elses's home with the consequent world uproar and chaos. They have quietly put in place innumerable 'small print' to justify an unprecedented election cancellation and oversee the remains of empire. Now, I don't think the Great American Public are deeply concerned about what the rest of the world thinks of them, they are watching their salaries disappear, their home's values plunge, food prices rise and gasoline hovering around 3$ a gallon. It will be home-grown issues that dominate the elections. Having said all that, I also wait for the surprise candidate: Al Gore who, equipped with a shiny new Oscar and the prestigious Principe de Asturias award from Spain must be considered practically Royalty by the MSM. I don't think he will jump on the bandwagon, he finds collecting awards much more fulfilling and easier than deciding whether or not to intervene in Darfur, for example. I honestly feel the US is in for a long stretch of decline, economically and socially, its position as leading voice on the World Stage is now over, although the truth of this will not be obvious for many. ( I wonder if Ops154 will now surface?) Edited by Duende |

I think it is too early to pick the winner but if I go by the sound of the cash register, from the peace party in disguise may be looking toward Hillary's candidacy even though Obama is not far behind. But with slick Willy in tow I don't think BHO stands a chance. He is double digit behind in the polls. After watching couple of debates I see Mama Hillary is also quite slick as compared to BHO. On the war party side Rudy is more aggressive even with smaller war chest vs Mitt, I think people people don't want a Mormon in the White House as yet even though they are a preferred lot in the American bureaucracy. In the final match up I think Rudy can sell the Twin Tower scenario better than most cuz his a super sales man in politics and people may yet buy the war policies advocated by this guy. He beats everybody in the polls. I couldn't believe when he pounced on Ron Paul for telling the truth about the 911 and the applause he received from the audience during last debate. We still need to get past at least a few primaries for clarity. Can not say any thing for certain till the election has started and B & C company has ridden into sunset. In the mean time keep an eye on the cash register, in the long run in the US it all boils down to $$$. In last election Bush spent quarter of a Billion dollars and he beat Kerry by 50 mills, Kerry was a bit slow to collect n spend. Edited by Sign*Reader |

As Sign Reader rightly reminds us, it is usually the candidate who spends
the most on his/her campaign who 'buys' everybody's votes. What does that say for the 'democracy' America claims? Anyway, it occurs to me that even your chosen title for this thread betrays your subconscious assumption that (as AKMf says) the US will remain a 'world leader' although this has transformed into 'world bully' in the past 8 years. Isn't it presumptious to think that after the 2008 elections, simply by voting in a new president, we will be in a 'new World Order? The truth is that there is already a new world order, it's just that the US generally has yet to wake up to the fact. China alone is transforming geopolitics and now has a finger in every African country in search of raw materials to fuel its economy, Russia has grown in terms of political clout by virtue of its oil and gas reserves. The world is no longer looking to America to lead the way in anything, least of all in terms of human rights or as an example of democracy. Oh, sorry, I forgot Albania, they still think the US is everything. (Did anybody else see G.W get his watch stolen off his wrist while on an enthusiastic walkabout in Tirana?) Albania must be just about the only country in the world where G.W is welcomed without protests or riots! Political pundits are debating whether we are now in a multi-polar world order, with countries such as China and India leading the Asian and Pacific basin economies, and Russia predominant over the 25 nations comprising Europe. In terms of economic clout, you have to sit back and digest the fact that there are now more Euros in circulation worldwide than U.S Dollars, and think about where that places the US in terms of a New World Order. |

Duende, Seriously, for once I'd like for us to discuss something positive. Only those who think below the surface as self-defeatist do (no offense bro AK) think "Oh well, it doesn't matter, the U.S is still the world super power." When I go to school and when I study my ass off or when I go to work at the station I always have the thought of change in mind. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in humans but I believe humans are more capable of good than evil-even politicians. Politicians, like drugs can get addicted to power and the very people that live among them tolerate to these drugs (err...politicians). My only intention was to know if you guys have been keeping up on upcoming Canidates because I don't know. I've been so busy with work and school that I seriously do not know what's going on. |

I am still waiting for the 6 million # gorilla i.e., Freddy T to jump in the race that will completely change the calculus according to latest polls he is right behind Rudy today.
Also all those who think the Americans will let the China become the super power need to read the history. China is walking a very fine line of being the purveyor of the cheap products for Americans with collaboration of Kissinger and his ilk, the moment it will become painful enough for the Americans and few representative politician takes the helm the new Boston Tea Party will happen. The current Chinese economy is almost fifty percent export dependent and big part of that heads for American shores. If any POTUS decides that the WTO is not working and has started cutting close to the American's bone and switches for bilateral trade mode I bet the Chinese model will collapse in no time. Yes there will be suffering here in US then at least the Chinese will have to learn to play by the rules. I can hear Lou Dobbs discussing the issues it may get louder sooner or later. It is the corporate greed which is giving away the store to Chinese, the secret is coming out slowly. It is a long subject need not be discussed in this thread. Anybody who thinks the sweat shop operators and counterfeiters can be the world leaders think again! So far the dollar vs Euro thingy is concerned both are fiat currencies, it doesn't really matter; if US burns and goes down; it height of asininity to think that the US will leave the rest of the world in peace, by sign it is a Cancer nation, will take everybody with it MARK my words. IT loves the firework 4th of July every year and periodically other places. They will never accept the Chinese leadership, yellow peril is in political psyche, don't you remember?
