Today's khutbah was about gaining knowledge of and closeness to Allah (swt).  The imam said that this means obeying His commands and staying away from the things He has forbidden.  So we should pray and fast and give charity and avoid committing zina, taking usury etc.
Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds. (Surat al-Anaam: 162)

Khutbah today was about Allah having perfected our religion:

[5:3] This day I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favors upon you, and have chosen for you, Islam as your religion.

Thus, our deen is complete, and therefore no need for addition of deletions.

Today's khutbah was about "tawba".  The imam compared how most of us do tawbah to how the Sahabah did it.  We tend to just say "astagfirAllah" and then move on, sometimes reverting to our old behavior.  The Sahabah, on the other hand, were much more serious.  The example of Ka'b ibn Malik was given and how he sought forgiveness and was forgiven.  The Quran even mentions how Allah forgave Ka'b and two other men for their mistake in Sura Tawba:

"(He turned in mercy also) to the three who were left behind; (they felt guilty) to such a degree that the earth seemed constrained to them, for all its spaciousness, and their (very) souls seemed straitened to them,- and they perceived that there is no fleeing from Allah (and no refuge) but to Himself. Then He turned to them, that they might repent: for Allah is Oft-Returning, Most Merciful." (9:118)
Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds. (Surat al-Anaam: 162)

The khutbah this afternoon was about the importance of enjoining good and forbidding wrong; that one should first of all properly know the correct Islamic way, prior to correcting his brother or sister in faith.

You are the best nation brought forth for the people of the world: you enjoin right and you forbid wrong, and you believe in Allah. Qur'an 3/110.

As-salaam alaikum.  Today's khutbah was about repentance.  When we commit a sin, we should seek forgiveness from Allah (swt) but also to try to never do the sin again.  The imam said that when we sin, we should always follow it up with a good deed.  When we see someone doing something wrong, we should seek to advise them with kind words.
Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds. (Surat al-Anaam: 162)

As-salaam alaikum.  Today's khutbah was about supplicating to Allah (swt), whether for forgiveness or blessings or even children.  For the latter, the imam mentioned the prayer of the prophet Zechariah, which was answered with the birth of the prophet Yahya (John the Baptist), peace be upon them all.  The imam also mentioned what he considered one of the most important duas in the Quran:

"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil 'akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban-nar"

Our Lord! Grant us good in this world and good in the hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire.[2:201]

Imaam reminded us to have patience and complain only to Allah, as in the example to Yaqoub:

قَالَ إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللّهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ اللّهِ مَا لاَ تَعْلَمُونَ

He said: I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allah, and I know from Allah that which you know not. [Surah Yusuf V.86]

As-salaam alaikum.  Today's khutbah was about the sin of shirk, of which there are two types.  The first type is the "greater shirk", which is ascribing partners to Allah (swt).  The second type is called al-riyah or showing off, when we do good deeds not for Allah's sake but to be seen by others. Therefore, we do the deeds for the sake of others instead of for Allah (swt).  May Allah protect us from the sin of shirk.

Say: "Truly, my prayer and my service of sacrifice, my life and my death, are (all) for Allah, the Cherisher of the Worlds. (Surat al-Anaam: 162)
