Sister Hayfa your posting was filled with good gems. Chris, as your faith in God and true desire for becoming close to our Lord develops, understand of Islamic 'law' will begin to follow and become easier to grasp. Read and attempt to grasp the Quran as much as you can. When I read the Quran and run into a verse I don't quite understand. I write it down, and ask others for the meaning. I try to approach someone that is really knowledgable and someone who can present a understanding I can grasp. 'Living rules' as you put it, can all be found in the Quran. You will not find a valid, reliable hadith that contradicts the Quran. It took me a lil while to grasp hadiths, but I now find them really helpful understanding Islamic ways when I need more understanding of verses in the Quran. I have a collection of Sahih Muslim hadiths, and they are a real 'treat' to read, and I'm grateful for the time and efffort that our earlier scholars put in to record the ways of our Prophet Muhammed (p.b.u.h) This is what wikepedia says about Sahih Muslim hadiths- Sahih Muslim (Arabic: صحيح مسلم, ṣaḥīḥ Muslim) is one of the Six major collections of the hadith in Sunni Islam, oral traditions relating to the words and deeds of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. It is the second most famous hadith collection among Sunni Muslims. It was collected by Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj, also known as Imam Muslim.
