According to Islam, those people are in Barzakh (A place pf barrier). The church also has a name for it. When I remember, I will edit the post and inform you. Or wait, I remember, it is called "purgatory."
That is as much as the place for those who passed away, is concerned. I hope it helps.

Yes I believe there is one Judgement Day too, GOD is just judges only by what He has revealed to each of us.
I am not Catholic but know that Catholic church has gone back and forth on purgatory over the years. I believe it is not a place but an event that occurs to us. Isn't this similar to the Muslims crossing the fire?

No, purgatory is a place where souls can undergo temporary punishment in order to atone for some of their earthly sins before the Day of Judgement. Islam has no belief of this type.
