hypocritical. The average atheist probably lives a far holier life.

ok ahmad, what exactly is the difference between desertion and apostasy in your view? i have my thoughts about it of course, but since you asked if i understood the difference between them. i have always viewed desertion as a military term in the first instance, but not exclusively so. apostasy is utter rejection of ones faith, not down to weakness in keeping it or lack of faith in observing it, but deliberate, total rejection of it. that is my understanding, without even looking up the dictionary

Yap! you are correct in your understanding the difference which usually people don't appreciate it even if they open up the dictionary. Somehow, I guess, you have been very close to military. Am I correct?

you are not correct, ahmad, in your guess. i have always been a creature of habit, rather that discipline, with no connection whatever to the military. but perhaps, having very little self-discipline of my own, i might have responded well to the kind of discipline the military would have imposed (too late for all that now though) - but all this may leave you with a problem, i dont know. how do you explain the clear reports in the hadith (see my quote from mawdudi) of women being killed for apostasy? did muhammad enlist them in his army only for them to desert? or was the issue simply a rejection of his revelations?
